407 First Class, 1,637 Tourist Class passengers When the SS FRANCE was launched by Madame Charles De Gaulle on May 11 1960, the great era of transatlantic steamship travel was in its twilight years. Replacing two legendary prewar veterans, the stylish ILE DE FRANCE and the much loved LIBERTE, the FRANCE had the distinction of being the longest liner in the world. Her graceful hull was a modified version of the NORMANDIE's, with a similarly arced "whale back" bow (but with an updated stern), however the FRANCE was perhaps most distinguished by her two unusual funnels, which dispensed exhaust through wings on either side (This feature was quite revolutionary for the day, inspiring a line of much-sought-after ashtrays that incorporated the same principal!). Indeed, in the early 1980's Carnival Cruise Lines "discovered" this concept, incorporating it with their first newbuild, TROPCALE, and ultimately making it their architectural trademark with their fleet of "mega" and "super" liners that followed. This last great French ship of state and final purpose-built vessel for French Line (Compagnie Generale Transatlantique or "CGT") undertook her trials in November of 1961. The $80 million liner embarked on a shakedown cruise on January 18, 1962 from Le Havre to the Canary Islands, before commencing with a heralded maiden crossing on February 3, 1962 from Le Havre to New York.

Staff Writer, CNET News.com June 7, 2002, 2:00 PM PT A Norwegian educational center for cultural preservation lost the password to a historical database cataloging 11,000 original books and manuscripts, but was able to recover it with help from the Web. E-mail messages from more than 100 good Samaritans flooded the Ivar Aasen Center for Language and Culture starting Thursday afternoon after the organization called for aid in hacking into one of its own databases to which the password was lost, said a message posted to the center's Web site on Friday. Among the messages was the correct password to the locked database, which the center had posted online. "Our computing expert is now on the case," Kirsti Langstoyl, librarian

DEAR EDUCATOR,
Do your standards of learning (SOLs) suggest that students compare other nations with the USA? Have you considered Norway? Here's what Tom Christensen and B. Guy Peters report in Structure, Culture, and Governance: A Comparison of Norway and the United States (Rowman and Littlefield, 1999). Both nations, they observe, are deeply committed to democracy. But Norwegians have an "historically rooted willingness to accept a strong ... redistributive role for the public sector," while Americans show "less willingness" to allow government "a significant role in steering society." Students using this unit can explore that comparison and other aspects of life in Norway — literally, one of the world's most "giving" nations. Social Studies Reading Skills as they tackle the unit pages designed especially for their use. CURRICULUM STANDARDS
This unit will serve courses in history, world regions, government, and contemporary issues (9-12). Among prototypical SOLs supported by the unit are these three, cited from:

    Abstract:
Demographic, cultural, and oral-history approaches to the study of falling fertility in nineteenth- and twentieth-century France, Canada, Britain, Holland, Norway, and Finland confirm the importance of the persistent usage of "traditional" methods of birth controlsuch as coitus interruptus, abortion, and forms of periodic abstinencethroughout the period when fertility fell, though fertility fell in each case at a different point in time. These studies also use qualitative evidence that provides insight into the reasons for contraceptive preference, thereby combining the history of changing sexualities with the analysis of demographic change.

Of Christian's two sons Hans was at first only ruler of Denmark and Norway, but, by an agreement made at Calmar, he was able to gain Sweden also. Yet it was only after defeating Sten Sture that his position in Sweden was secure. King Hans I was succeeded (1513) in Denmark and Norway by his son, Christian II. By 1586, Norway had become part of the Danish Kingdom. In 1814, as a result of the Napoleonic wars, Norway was separated from Denmark and combined with Sweden. The union persisted until 1905, when Sweden recognized Norwegian independence. Until the 1981 election, Norway had been governed by majority Labor Party governments since 1935, except for three periods (1963, 1965-71, and 1972-73). The Labor Party lost its majority in the Storting in the 1981 elections. Since that time, minority and coalition governments have been the rule. * Portions of this text are from the print edition of the 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia
