History
Norway's history is divided in two parts: Before 1387, and after 1814.
A chronology of important dates:
800's
The bloody conflicts between tribal kingdoms, as well as a craving for adventure, prompted Norwegians to leave their lands in what are known as Viking voyages. Warriors from the fjords (Vik in Norse) raided throughout western Europe and into the Mediterranean.
890's
Harald HÃ¥rfagre ("fair-hair") unites Norway to a single kingdom. Ireland falls under Norwegian rule. Iceland is colonized.
King Olav Tryggvason converts to Christianity.
(circa) Norway is split in three parts by Olof Skötkonung, King of Svealand, his step-father Svend Forkbeard, King of Denmark, and the exiled Jarl Eirik. King Olav Tryggvason is defeated. Jarl Eirik gets a third of Norway as his own, and the part of Olof Skötkonung's as his vassal.

A Brief History of Sons of Norway
By Hildegarde M. Strom Professor C. Sverre Norborg begins his fine history of Sons of Norway, An American Saga, with this descriptive paragraph: "The founders of Sons of Norway were Americans. They had crossed the wide Atlantic in search of greater opportunities for themselves and their families. From the day they passed through the immigration gates at Ellis Island, they knew that their lives and fortunes were linked forever with this vast and free land." This is the strong thread which runs through much of the Sons of Norway story: a love for the land of their birth but at the same time a fierce loyalty to their new land. The history of Sons of Norway could be described as one of steady and deliberate progress. By the 1870s, Minneapolis had a very active nucleus of Norwegian emigrants, many of whom had come from the Trondheim area to form a colony in the northern part of the city. From that group came the 18 founders who signed on as charter members of Sons of Norway. Interestingly enough, it was a woman who was at the center of all of the activity prior to this forming. Ingeborg Levorsdatter Langeberg was the first permanent Norwegian resident of Minnesota, coming here as a maid in the home of Territorial Governor Alexander Ramsey. She subsequently met and married a well-to-do farmer from a northern suburb of Minneapolis. When her husband died, she became a wealthy widow whose home was a friendly center for all newcomers, one of whom was Ole Draxten. He was the first Norwegian to build a house in the area and it was his son Bersvend who was later to become the first Supreme President of Sons of Norway.

Norway - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Norwegians were Norsemen, or Normansthe Vikings who traded and raided throughout northern Europe from about 800 to 1100 AD. Early European chronicles describe those forays, which changed and greatly influenced the culture and history of Europe. Words of German dialect spoken by Vikings resembled the language spoken in England at the time. The daring and bravery with which they wandered the seas was told in many colorful stories and poems, called sagas.
Skillful and daring seamen, they were the most efficient shipbuilders in Europe. As early as 787, they began to attack the coasts of England. They settled Greenland and Iceland, and from there, they sailed as far as the eastern borders of North America, which they called Vinland. It is believed that they reached the coast of North America in the 900's, but later abandoned their settlements there.
Even though Vikings were farmers in their homeland, spending their spare time playing quite peaceful games similar to chess, and various dice games, in their adventurous invasions on the sea early Vikings loved war and fighting. They wore horned helmets and carried bronze lances and curved trumpets. They killed, stole, and destroyed every place they landed. These first invasions were simply acts of piracy, but in some cases these invasions led to some very important settlements. They built the city of Dublinthe capital of modern Irelandin about 840. The city was the center of Viking power in Ireland, and the influence of Norwegian Vikings in Ireland and Scotland lasted throughout the Middle Ages.

Medieval Norway
The history of Norway before the age of the Vikings is indistinct from that of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 9th cent. the country was still divided among the numerous petty kings of the fylker. Harold I , of the Yngling or Scilfing dynasty (which claimed descent from one of the old Norse gods), defeated the petty kings (c.900) and conquered the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but failed to establish permanent unity. Harold's campaigns drove many nobles and their followers to settle in Iceland and France. In the next two centuries Norsemen raided widely in W Europe and established the Norse duchy of Normandy. Harold himself concentrated on developing a dynasty; before he died (c.935) the country was divided among his sons, but one of them, Haakon I , defeated (c.935) his brothers and temporarily reunited the kingdom.

Norway History Genealogy
Introduction to Norwegian surname conventions by Steinar Furan: Other facts worth noting about Norwegian surnames: Names ending in 'son' are unusual in Norway. Much more common is the 'sen' ending. If you are an American with a Norwegian name ending in 'son', your forfather almost certainly changed his family's name on coming to America to make it sound more Anglican. This was quite common in the 1800s, and immigration officials back then were more than willing to help the newcomers find names more easily pronounced in English. This could result in anything from small and almost insignifficant changes to dramatic alterations. Examples are:
  • Aanonson - from - Aanonsen Britson - from - Ingebritsen Hanson - from - Hansen Nelson - from - Nilsen Olson - from - Olsen Reierson - from - Reiersen
Other names that have changed their spelling from the original are:
  • Selgelid - from - Seljelid Lea - from - Lie Lee - from - Lie
The 'sen' ending has the same original meaning as the 'son' ending in English: It used to mean "son of". Some of these names like "Nilsen" are, therefore, very common. However, a name like "Reiersen" is quite rare. Some names have changed their spelling several times and people from the same family have ended up with different surnames. One example of this is the unusual name of Qvenild which changed to Quenild, Quinnild, Quinnel and Kvenild. All these names are actually one and the same, and are all in use today.

E-mail messages from more than 100 good Samaritans flooded the Ivar Aasen Center for Language and Culture starting Thursday afternoon after the organization called for aid in hacking into one of its own databases to which the password was lost, said a message posted to the center's Web site on Friday. Among the messages was the correct password to the locked database, which the center had posted online. "Our computing expert is now on the case," Kirsti Langstoyl, librarian for the center, wrote in the posting. "On Monday we (will) know if we have the original database working, and we will present the name of the person with the final solution." It's unknown whether the helpful hackers that provided the correct answer decrypted the database, guessed the correct password, or used a flaw in the database's security to obtain access to the data. In its online message, the center said it would post more details on Monday.

In this section of my site, I have collected information about my home country, Norway. This section does not have very much to do with guitar. But playing guitar should not prevent all you out there from having some interest in this country up in the far north. In no other country can you get this close to the Pole, and still have temperatures that can give acceptable living conditions. Compare the location of Norway with places in America, and you will see that Oslo is as far north as Anchorage, and North Cape is further north than you can get in Alaska. If you want to experience the midnight sun without leaving the civilisation, you have to go to Norway. Bear in mind that this site is primarily a guitar site. Introduction
This is a very brief outline of Norwegian history. Get some of the books, or follow some of the links if you want to know more. (Many of the travel books have chapters on history, and are often good if you just want an overview). Norway is a young country. Up to around year 500 AD is prehistoric time in Norway. Then the Viking age was the age of Norse power, when the Norwegians traded and raided in Europe. One often see the loothing of Lindisfarne in 793 as the "official" beginning of the viking age. When I went to school, we learned that King Harald Fairhair ruled in a united Norway after the final defeat of cheiftains in the battle of Hafrsfjord in 872. I probably happened some years later, and Norway was far from united. But this was the beginning of Norway as a united state. Officially, Norway became a Christian country in 1029, after the death of

Norway History and Culture
History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.
