A United Kingdom

Norway and the EU
The first men to appear in what is now Norway, emerged from dim pre-history when the great inland ice sheets were retreating over Scandinavia. 10,000 years ago the forefathers of today's Norwegians hunted reindeer and other prey on their long trek north. The land they came to had for centuries borne the weight of the icecap, so the coastline was about 200 meters higher than it is today. The oldest proofs of human activity were discovered on a hill in the southeast region of Østfold, not far from the southern frontier with Sweden. At that time the hill was probably an offshore island, just south of the glacier tip.
Ancient Norway (pre-800 A.D.) Top of page
There is no general agreement on where the ancestors of today's Norwegians came from, or on the routes they took on their journey north, but one of these routes certainly passed through Østfold. Artifacts found at settlements there are of the same type that have been discovered in southern Sweden and in Denmark. A further possible route may have led from the so-called North Sea continent to southwest Norway. These first Norwegians were hunters who, wherever nature permitted it, settled in small groups. They left proof of their existence in flint tools, clay vessels, and not least, rock carvings. In every part of Norway remain specimens of their art, hewn or ground into the rock. The carvings depict their prey: reindeer, moose, deer, bears and fish. People, or boats appear only seldom.

by Nils Johan Fosli, Oslo, Norway
Edited by Rosalie Sundin
The coast of Troms (the northwestern region of Norway) had a small Norwegian population a hundred years before the beginning of the era known as the Viking Age (ca. 1000 AD.) Just before 900 A.D., the Viking chief Ottar (Othere) visited the court of King Alfred the Great in England, where his words were recorded in writing. According to Ottar, he was the Norwegian that lived the farthest north of all others. Historians know Ottar was a wealthy man by the standards of his day, and an important source of his income was from the taxes paid to him by the Sami population in the far north. While the exact location of Ottar’s home is unidentified, it is known that he owned a farm in Troms.
The early Norwegian population in Troms were fishermen, whose livelihoods required them to live as close to the fishing grounds as possible. The land along the fjords were populated by the people known as "Sea Sami," who had seasonal camps throughout the area, and moved from one location to another. Hunting and fishing were the primary livelihoods of the Sea-Sami people.
In the 1700's the Norwegians living along the coast started to resettle along the fjords of Troms (Balsfjord, Lyngen, Nordreisa and Kvænangen.) These new Norsk settlers brought cows, sheep, goats and horses with them to their new settlements along the fjords, where most combined farming and fishing as their sources of income. For over 200 years, this combination of fishing and farming was the primary occupation of the Norwegian population in Troms. The existence of these new Norwegian settlements gradually forced the Sea-Sami to adjust their way of living; consequently they gave up their nomadic lifestyles and became farmers like their Norwegian counterparts.

The areas are friendship, outdoor life, practical knowledge and quality of life. Sea Scouting is very popular. Many groups own their own boats and follow programs based on life on the sea. NORWAY HISTORY
Norway was incorporated in 1797 when Maine was part of Massachusetts. The town grew throughout the first half of the 19 th Century, due to its position as a trading center for the surrounding area. In the middle of that century, Norway commenced a steady 100-year expansion of farming, milling and manufacturing. Prosperous sawmills, textile mills, tanneries, saddle manufacturers and shoe factories operated in Norway during this period. Downtown grew to accommodate major retail and wealthy residential neighborhoods. A fire destroyed most of the eastern end of Maine Street in 1894. The great reconstruction that followed is a defining period in Norway’s history. Most of the rebuilt structures stand today as some of the best examples of period architecture in Maine. These buildings comprise Norway’s historic district. From the 1950’s to the present day, Norway’s traditional economy declined severely. All but one of the commercial dairy farms went out of business, and many of the historic factories and downtown stores moved away or closed altogether. The jobless rate remained near 10% for most of that period until only recently.

Despite its neutrality, Norway was not able to avoid occupation by Germany in World War II. In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. The great majority belong officially to the Lutheran state Church, but on account of liberal laws there is a rapid development of sects. Catholics did not regain religious liberty until the middle of the nineteenth century. Reports as to their numbers vary from 1500, as given in the Protestant ). Eccleciastically the country is divided into 6 dioceses, with 83 provosts or deans, and 450 pastors. The largest city and the royal residence is Christiania (230,000 inhabitants), the seat of government, of the Parliament (Storthing), of the chief executive, of the state university, and of other higher schools. The most important commercial city is Bergen (80,000 inhabitants), important even in the Middle Ages and for a long time controlled by the Hanseatic League. Trondhjem, formerly Nidaros, a city of 40,000 inhabitants, was earlier the see of the Catholic archbishops , and the place where the Catholic kings were crowned and buried. Its fine cathedral, now in process of restoration, contains the bones of St. Olaf, the patron saint of Norway. The army is not highly trained; men between twenty-three and thirty-three years of age are liable for military duty. The modest well-manned navy is only used for coast defence.
    HISTORY
Unlike the Swedes and Danes, the Norwegians were not organized even so late as the ninth century. The name of king was borne by the chiefs and heads of separate clans, but their authority was limited and the rights of the subjects very extensive. Only by marauding expeditions were the Vikings able to gain honour and wealth, and at times also to acquire control of extensive districts. Their early history is lost in the fabulous tales of the bards. In 872, Harold Haarfager (Fair-Haired), after a decisive sea-fight near Stavanger, established his authority over all the clans. Those refusing to submit left the country and their possessions were confiscated. When Harold divided his kingdom among several sons, its permanence seemed once more uncertain, but

    The Vikings
In the period from 800 to 1050 A.D., the Nordic peoples made their dramatic entry into the European arena. They stormed forth, terrorizing wellestablished societies which were accustomed to war, but not to the startling tactics of the Vikings. By Arne Emil Christensen However, contact between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe was nothing new. Archaeological findings show that trade and cultural influence can be traced back several millennia B.C. Nevertheless, the Nordic area was a distant outpost with little political and economic value for the rest of Europe. The furthest westward drive ended with the unsuccessful attempt at founding a settlement in North America. Around 1000 A.D., people from Iceland or Greenland discovered land to the west, and the sagas tell of several journeys including attempts to plant roots in the new land. Conflicts arose between these colonists and the indigenous Indians or the Eskimos, and the newcomers gave up. Attempts at pinpointing the location of the Norsemen's settlement have led to such varied results as Labrador and Manhattan, in accordance with different interpretations of the Icelandic sagas. In the 1960s, Anne-Stine and Helge Ingstad found the site of early homesteads on the north coast of Newfoundland. Excavation showed these to be the same sort of buildings found on Greenland and Iceland. In addition, Nordic artifacts were excavated at the site and dated at circa 1000 A.D. Whether these are traces of the settlements mentioned in the sagas, or from other journeys which we have no record of, is impossible to say. However, the finds prove that Nordic seafarers really sailed to the North American Continent around the year 1000, as narrated in the Icelandic sagas.
