The 'Land of the Midnight Sun' has delightfully long summer days, pleasantly low-key cities, unspoiled fishing villages and rich historic sites that include Viking ships and medieval stave churches. Norway prizes its stunning natural wonders and retains a robust frontier character unusual in Europe. It's not all frozen tundra, either. The origin of the first inhabitants of Norway is uncertain, but it seems likely that they traveled north from central Europe. The known history of the country begins in the 9th century AD and is based on the Viking sagas, supported by archaeological evidence, and the explorations of Viking adventurers who colonized the Scottish islands, parts of the Scottish and Irish mainlands, Iceland and (for a while) Greenland. Norway itself was divided into a number of fiefdoms; the unification process began with King Harald Fairhair, who defeated the major northern tribes at the battle of Hafrsfjord (near Stavanger) in 872. Over the next two centuries, Christianity gradually spread into the country, supplanting traditional beliefs in Norse gods. By 1060, the country was unified.

      Medieval Norway
The history of Norway before the age of the Vikings is indistinct from that of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 9th cent. the country was still divided among the numerous petty kings of the fylker. Harold I , of the Yngling or Scilfing dynasty (which claimed descent from one of the old Norse gods), defeated the petty kings (c.900) and conquered the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but failed to establish permanent unity. Harold's campaigns drove many nobles and their followers to settle in Iceland and France. In the next two centuries Norsemen raided widely in W Europe and established the Norse duchy of Normandy. Harold himself concentrated on developing a dynasty; before he died (c.935) the country was divided among his sons, but one of them, Haakon I , defeated (c.935) his brothers and temporarily reunited the kingdom.

The Early Years. In the early 1880's there was an exodus of immigrants from Europe to the New World, lured by the prospects of more space, cheaper more productive land and the chance to a better way of life. Many of these early comers located first in the United States or Eastern Canada. Meanwhile, the great North-West of Canada was being surveyed and opened up for homesteads and word of the wonderful opportunities to be found there were widely advertised and reached the ears of many in Minnesota, as well as elsewhere. The Mr. and Mrs. Ole M. Olstad family and four grown sons were one of these families that decided to pull up roots in Minnesota and head for the Northwest Territories. They made their way to the Duhamel settlement near the Battle River. Duhamel had been settled for some time but the Olstad family chose to settle several miles south of the Battle River and filed homesteads for themselves and for friends and relatives from the United States. The Naming of New Norway Most of the eligible adults availed themselves of homesteads as well as buying C.P.R. land which was available for $3.00 per acre and so the large family soon owned a considerable acreage in the surrounding country, and for a time the district was known as the "Olstad District". As other Norweigen families moved in as well families from other nationalities the name "New Norway was given to the little settlement which started about 1895 one mile east of the present townsite.

Our Norwegian Heritage Norway: History The forefathers of modern Norwegians were prehistoric hunters and farmers that arrived after the last Ice Age and other groups that continued to arrive through the Roman period and on through the 6th Century AD. The settlements in Southern and Western Norway reached saturation point prior to the Viking Era and it is from these areas that the Vikings sailed. Viking Era (793 - 1066): Although many Norwegians glorify these seaworthy marauders, their victims had other opinions. It should be noted that the Vikings did not just destroy lives and property while stealing valuables and people for slaves, they also created colonies in Ireland, Scotland, and Iceland and extensively explored the northern Atlantic Ocean. This era is said to have begun in 793 and ended in 1066 with the defeat of King Harald Hardruler in 1066. In the southeast and north Norway, on the other hand, settlement based on agriculture and other activities spread to previously uninhabited areas, particularly in the mountains and valleys. Unification Era (1020 - 1350): At the beginning of this era, Norway was not unified, but by 1060 the country was unified by force with Christianity forcibly introduced and finally in1030, becoming the "state religion" with the death of martyred King Olaf. The 12th and the 13th centuries were a time of growth and prosperity during which Oslo became Norway's capital. During this time

History of Norway
Author: Tor Dagre. The first men to appear in what is now Norway, emerged from dim pre-history when the great inland ice sheets were retreating over Scandinavia. 10,000 years ago the forefathers of today's Norwegians hunted reindeer and other prey on their long trek north. The land they came to had for centuries borne the weight of the icecap, so the coastline was about 200 meters higher than it is today. The oldest proofs of human activity were discovered on a hill in the southeast region of Østfold, not far from the southern frontier with Sweden. At that time the hill was probably an offshore island, just south of the glacier tip. There is no general agreement on where the ancestors of today's Norwegians came from, or on the routes they took on their journey north, but one of these routes certainly passed through Ostfold. Artifacts found at settlements there are of the same type that have been discovered in southern Sweden and in Denmark. A further possible route may have led from the so-called North Sea continent to southwest Norway.
