Christianity in Norway
London, 994 A.D. Kneeling at the baptismal font is Olav Tryggvason, a Norwegian-born Viking. Twice, he and his men have conquered Southeast England, and twice King Ethelred of England had to pay a huge ransom to get the Vikings to return their spoils. But now Olav Tryggvason has become a Christian - the English have finally been freed from the Viking raids. According to the saga: Olav Tryggvason returned to Norway. and an extensive and difficult quest awaited him - to convert the extended and sparsely populated country to the Christian faith. The consequences of his last voyage to England were dramatic. Historians disagree about much, but none deny that Olav Tryggvason became a zealous Christian. Faith in the Christian God dominated his life after his baptism, and Norway has never fostered a more powerful missionary. The heathens were to be won for Jesus. The Norwegian faith A Roman Catholic visiting Norway just can't comprehend...dancing a sin? Drinking wine a sin? The use of epithets a sin? "When were you saved?" queries the Christian Norwegian.

72. Nasjonal Samling - The Governments
The political party Nasjonal Samling (National Unity) was formed in Oslo on the 17th May 1933, with Major Vidkun Quisling as leader, and State Attorney Johan Bernhard Hjort as second leader. It formed the government during the German occupation of norway.
http://www.nuav.net/ns.html
The N.S Party Program clearly stated the abolishment of all political parties; only one was to exist: N.S.
He had also served as Minister of Defense in the Agrarian Government 1931-33. The party was organized in a ”National Organization” (Riksorganisasjon), a Woman Organization, (NS Kvinneorganisasjon), a Combat Organization (NS Kamporganisasjon), a Youth Organization, (Nasjonal Samlings Ungdoms-Fylking – NSUF) and the Hird. The latter was to be the hard-core political uniformed storm troops of NS, and equivalent to the German S.A.
During the elections in 1933, Nasjonal Samling had a co-operation with the Farmers Aid organisation, (Bydgefolkets Krisehjelp), and they two finally got 27 850 votes. This was quite a huge number, since N.S only had existed for 4 months. At the county elections in 1934, N.S continued their success, especially in Stavanger where the local leader Gulbrand Lunde, a young and popular politician, finally collected 2558 votes for the Party. In the early days, Nasjonal Samling was deeply religiously rooted, and gained relatively huge support from both the Church and the religious parts of the population. As the party grew more militant from 1935, the pro-German and anti-Semitic section of the Party got more power, and N.S lost most of their influence in the Church.
At the elections in 1936 N.S only got 26 577 votes. This was one of the reasons to the bitter conflict between Quisling and Hjort; the latter finally left the party together with several prominent members, as Hjort had many followers. From now on, Nasjonal Samling clearly moved from being a Party to getting more like a sect.

Where none have gone before:
The life of Roald Amundsen
It is 85 years since Roald Amundsen, on December 14th 1911, stood victorious at the South Pole. He had reached a goal that was the dream of many men. For the first time, human voices broke the awesome silence of the world's southernmost point. The achievement was to bring fame to Amundsen and his men. But in a letter, describing his reactions at that time, Amundsen openly confessed that "no man has ever stood at the spot so diametrically opposed to the object of his real desires", which for the ambitious Norwegian was the North Pole. For Amundsen a new goal always beckoned. He himself described his life as a "constant journey towards the final destination". By Linn Ryne Amundsen was born in 1872 at Borge, near the town of Sarpsborg, in southeast Norway. From boyhood days his life was singularly purposeful. No nagging doubts troubled his firm resolution. He wished to be a polar explorer. He devoured all the literature he could acquire on polar exploration, particularly the ill-fated journey of the British explorer, Sir John Franklin, who with the "Erebus" and the "Terror" set out to find the Northwest Passage in 1845, and never returned. Like Nansen he devoted a great deal of time to training and strengthening his physique to make his body a perfect instrument for the hazardous adventures he was determined to undertake. However, he was a dutiful son, and bowed to his mother's wish that he study medicine. But at the age of 21, when both his parents had died, Roald Amundsen sold his medical textbooks, packed away the cranium he had studied and announced his intention of becoming a polar explorer.

Welcome to Government about Norway Administration Where We Are Council Who We Are ... Developer Info Projects / Initiatives Norway-email The City of Norway is a casual, North Country community which values outdoor activities, community events and a peaceful co-existence. With a population of some 3,000 residents, the community offers a progressive blend of small-town charm with convenient access to life's other necessities. With an eye always towards the future, the City of Norway has offered these benefits to its residents since 1889.
On a historical note, the first iron mine was established and named "The Norway Mine" by the president of the local mining company, a Scandinavian named J.J. Hagerman. The city developed from the mine's location. It is a subject of local debate whether the mine was named for the country of Hagerman's ancestors, or for the Norway Pine (red pine) which grows abundantly in the area. It is clear, however, that the City owes its name in some fashion to its Scandinavian heritage.
