Geographically speaking, it is characterized by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes.
Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Bolivia or New Jersey. Contents:

Fact Sheet FS 105 h Publisher: Swedish Institute Publication date: July 2005 PDF (screen) A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country has changed over the centuries: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish-Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century-old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden’s borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war since 1814.

Norwegian Symbols
  • The History of the Norwegian Flag
The flag as we know it today, was born in 1821. The colours are an inheritage from the free countries of Europe in the 19th century, like Great Britain, France as well as the United States. It's the same colours as in the tricolour, the symbol of the revolution in France. The cross is an inheritage from our Nordic neighbours, Denmark and Sweden. Later, other Nordic countries have followed in this tradition: Finnland, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands and Åland.
  • The Flag of Norway
Flag Description: red with a blue cross outlined in white that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side in the style of the Dannebrog (Danish flag)
  • National Animal, Flower and Bird What is Norway's national animal, flower and bird? Find out by visiting this site.
  • Symbols of Norway: Milk Milk symbolises health, the honest work on the land, the beauty of the Norwegian scenery and not least pure whiteness. In this latter respect, milk holds a position comparable to snow, and it goes without saying that an urban-minded no-nonsense capitalist like Per Hatling must fight in vain against a national totem of this magnitude.

    Geography
Norway extends so far to the north that distances can be long. The drive from Lindesnes in the south to the North Cape covers about 2500 km. However, these great distances allow the visitor to experience dramatic variations in the landscape. The road network is well developed and the majority of the roads have a reasonably good standard. Bridges over deep fjords and tunnels under towering mountains shorten the journey, and as you emerge from a tunnel you can admire the stunning and unexpected views of the ever-changing landscape. Norway is one of the few countries in the world with fjords – deep indentations in the coastline formed by the scouring action of glaciers millions of years ago. The train is a reliable and exciting way to experience Norway, and from the comfort of a modern carriage you can watch the beautiful countryside unfold. The Fjords of Norway Trip Design We arranged a trip to the fjords of Norway in late August 2000 at the end of a relatively cold and dreary summer in northern Europe. We've always wanted to visit the fjords, especially after tromping through the rugged southeast coast of Alaska the summer before. But we had no friends who knew the area, so we set out to plan a trip using the WWW. Information about the region was scarce. But we figured that as long as we stayed in old, small hotels and lodges and avoided the cities served by cruise ships, we couldn't fare very poorly! We were right. We bought a good map of the region at a travel bookstore to find the areas that looked remote. Then we located the old hotels on the map using used the web sites at the end of this page to locate the nicest looking regions and hotels on the map. Finally, we decided that we'd prefer to stay one area and explore it intensively - rather than driving daily from place to place. That's our preference since otherwise meeting people and chatting is all but impossible. Lingering in one place for a while gives you a chance to get below the geology and to peek a bit into the people and their culture. Della and I liked this strategy - Solvorn and the region around the Lustrafjord are charming, and there is enough to do and see to justify staying in one one place for about a half a week before moving on. We went up into the high mountains, explored a remote but accessible glacier, and wandered through the remote valley villages between the large town of Sogndal and the large village of Lom. Had we more time we would have headed for a coastal village, such as Alesund, or taken the small boat that plies the lengthy west coast of Norway from Bergen in the south well into the Arctic Circle in a few days. We were deeply impressed at the friendliness and education of Scandinavians. Everyone in the tourist business speaks eloquent English (and several other languages). Drivers are polite.
