Norway is a young nation with a long history, especially as a maritime nation. In spite of being joined to Denmark for 400 years, Norway retained a strong cultural tradition of its own, which, together with cultural impulses from abroad, produced its own unique diversity. This can be seen not only in museums and galleries, but also in the landscape. In addition to its music, literature and art, Norwegian culture is evident in the traditional national costumes, or bunads, which are worn with pride on special occasions such as weddings, christenings and of course on 17 May, the Norwegian national day. The Saami are the indigenous people of Norway and are today a minority group. They have their own parliament and live mainly in the county of Finnmark in northern Norway. The Saami people traditionally make their living from reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. They are proud of their heritage and produce beautiful arts and crafts. In this section of my site, I have collected information about my home country, Norway. This section does not have very much to do with guitar. But playing guitar should not prevent all you out there from having some interest in this country up in the far north. In no other country can you get this close to the Pole, and still have temperatures that can give acceptable living conditions. Compare the location of Norway with places in America, and you will see that Oslo is as far north as Anchorage, and North Cape is further north than you can get in Alaska. If you want to experience the midnight sun without leaving the civilisation, you have to go to Norway. Bear in mind that this site is primarily a guitar site. I have no ambitions as to develop this section of the site in the same way as the guitar site. Culture is increasingly prominent on the international agenda. But the discussion about whether and how culture contributes to combating poverty and sustainable development has far to go. Part six in a series about culture and development policy by donor countries: Norway.
    Norway
Culture is nothing less than a human right and an essential force for development, according to the Norwegian directorate for development collaboration. According to the Norwegians, supporting cultural heritage is a tool for achieving other development objectives such as fighting poverty. Culture has recently been designated a priority by Norad, the directorate for development collaboration under the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previously Norway's cultural efforts were primarily collaborations with Israel, Egypt, India and China. Providing a stage for each other's cultural expressions was the foremost objective. Since 2000, Norad has not only supported culture projects in various developing countries, but has designated culture as an important aspect of its general policy. Norad is involved in the rehabilitation of cultural legacy in Pakistan (Hunza Valley) and Ethiopia (Gondar). The organization also supports street theatre in Bangladesh and theatre groups in Zimbabwe. Furthermore it is one of the founders of the Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem. Norad collaborates with national governments and organisations as well as with Norwegian institutions. The

The publication, which will be printed in several thousand copies, is intended to be a useful tool for the industry in the work of developing a good HSE culture. Link: Theme pamphlet "HSE and culture" (pdf) The theme pamphlet was first published in Norwegian only during the conference on HSE culture, which the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate organized in cooperation with RF-Rogaland Research in November last year. In terms of contents there are few changes compared with the first edition, but an extensive review of the texts and layout has resulted in a message of a higher quality. This is also emphasized by the choice of paper. In addition, the theme pamphlet contains updated figures from the questionnaire survey under the direction of the Risk Trends Project (RNNS). The requirement for good HSE culture is laid down in the regulatory requirements of 1 January 2002 for the Petroleum Activities.

Norway's geographic position at the edge of the European continent helped maintain a national isolation until the 20th century. As a result, Norwegians were able to maintain a large amount of their folk heritage, though the traditions of seafaring and exploration have brought fresh cultural ideas from abroad.

    Russian-Norway Exhibition
The exhibition on Russian-Norway relations opens today in St. Petersburg in the Russian Ethnographic Museum Wednesday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen plan to attend the opening ceremonies, Norway's Consul General in St. Petersburg Otto Mamelund said. This year the exhibition, "Russia-Norway. Through Centuries and Borders", is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In the summer of 2004, the exhibition was shown in the Norwegian Folk Museum in Oslo where about a quarter of a million people attended it. "It is ideal that in 2005, the exhibition will be shown in the Northern capital of Russia. The first telegram recognizing the full independence of Norway arrived into Oslo in 1905 from St. Petersburg, the then-capital of Russia," Mamelund said.

    Cultural Heritage
A country's cultural heritage includes all traces of human activity in the physical environment. These are irreplaceable sources of information on people's lives and activities, and on the historical development of crafts, techniques and art. Because monuments and sites and cultural environments are non-renewable resources, their management must be based on a long-term perspective. Cultural monuments and sites are a source of emotional and aesthetic experiences for many people, and modern society can benefit from the preservation and active use of its cultural heritage. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage is responsible for the management of all archaeological and architectural monuments and sites and cultural environments in accordance with the applicable legislation. The Directorate is under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and plays a central role in public environmental management. Each county has a service responsible for cultural conservation in connection with the general administration of cultural affairs. The tasks of this service are to advise the county administration on cultural heritage management issues and to ensure that protected monuments and sites and cultural environments are taken into account in planning processes at the county and the municipal level. In the Sami areas, the S¡mediggi (Sami Parliament) has the same tasks as the county cultural heritage service.

Though Sweden was the politically dominant partner in the union, Barton argues convincingly that for much of the nineteenth century, the cultural influence was primarily in the other direction.” —Rochelle Wright, author of The Visible Wall: Jews and Other Ethnic Outsiders in Swedish Film “Barton does an excellent job drawing on material in Swedish, Norwegian, and English relating to the exchange of ideas between Sweden and Norway during the period of the Union [1814–1905]. A brief summary.
I n the texts on these pages you'll find references to several Sami groups. Even though the Sami's are one people that share a common past, there has been a lot of differentiation over the ages. The Sami's are not such a homogeneous group one could be made to believe after reading some of the descriptions found in english literature and on some websites.
Those who have looked carefully at the images on these pages where Sami's wear traditional clothes, might have noted that there's quite a variety. This might be the most obvious difference, yet there's several others as in the traditional cultural expressions such the handicraft and in the various forms of "singing" ie: the joik.
The Sami language also differs quite a lot from area to area, and when one person travels from one end of the Sami nation to the other the difference gets that large that the dialects gets mutually incomprehensible.
Since the Scandinavian languages Danish, Norwegian and Swedish is considered to be separate languages, it is not wrong to talk about different Sami languages as well since the differences is larger than among those three Scandinavian ones. One colour is given for each of the Sami groups.
