Midsummer is one of the major celebrations in Scandinavia, together with Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Walpurgis Night.
The most popular festival together with Christmas
Midsummer is the most popular festival in Scandinavia together with Christmas. It is a celebration of the Summer solstice, the longest day of the year. In Sweden and in Finland, Midsummer is celebrated as a public holiday during the third weekend of June, when everybody escapes to the country to spend a relaxing time in nature. The celebration of the Summer solstice is a very ancient practice, dating back to pre-Christian times. Midsummer was originally a fertility festival with many customs and rituals associated with nature and with the hope for a good harvest in the Autumn. Midsummer's Day was later christianized as the day of Saint John the Baptist, an important Christian saint. Yet, many of the ancient pre-Christian customs that marked the Summer solstice have survived to this day and are still being celebrated in Scandinavia as they were many hundreds of years ago.

St Olaf, Norway's Eternal King and Patron Saint has a reputation and place in history unchallenged by any other Norwegian King for the last 1000 years
Olaf II Haraldsson of Norway, King and Saint
Olaf Haraldsson, born in AD 995, was a viking who raided throughout western Europe and the Baltic until his return to Norway in 1015, where he was elected king of the Norwegians with the support of the Upland chieftains. His reign was rather typical for a king of the Viking Age: he defeated his oposition and governed as the King of Norway for a decade until he had to leave the throne to a more powerful king: Canute the Great of Denmark and England. Eventually Olaf Haraldsson tried to regain his kingdom but ended up losing his life at the Battle of Stiklestad, where his own followers rallied against him. The Battle of Stiklestad Stiklestad is the battlefield where King Olaf Haraldsson died on July 29th 1030 and became known as Saint Olaf. Olaf Haraldsson was returning to Norway with a small Swedish army with the intention of regaining the Norwegian crown he had lost. His opponents learn about this and assambled a large army of farmers and soldiers against him.

Norway History and Culture
History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.

Will Norway join us in a cultural capital marriage? Jun 15 2004
By Joe Riley, Daily Post THE first steps of what could prove an uneasy Capital of Culture marriage will be taken in Liverpool today. A delegation from Stavanger, Norway, will be asking for equal status with Liverpool in the 2008 celebratons. The Norwegian oil mecca has been officially paired with Liverpool by commissioners in Brussels. Both cities have been told they "must" co-operate as part of the deal for being awarded Capital of Culture titles. Liverpool is the EU member capital on behalf of the UK and Stavanger the Non-EU member capital. Last night, on the eve of a two-day visit to Merseyside by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Stavanger, Leif John Sevland and Brjg Tyssdal Moe, and nine of the city's councillors, Liverpool was still playing the ace card. Council leader Mike Storey said: "It is no surprise that people want to come to Liverpool to see how we are preparing for what we hope will be the best ever Capital of Culture.

Norway's plea for a share of culture Jun 14 2004
But it was not the sort of story the people of Stavanger wanted visitors to see. A blonde woman of 23 had been found strangled. A murder hunt was underway. One block from where I sat - with the pink-streaked sun still shining onto the habourside - fresh posies of flowers on the pavement marked the spot where a policeman had recently been gunned down, Stavanger (population 112,000, compared with Liverpool's 400,000) and hugging the south-west coast of Norway on the same latitude as the Shetland Isles, is not just a maritime theme-park latterly married to oil wealth and encircled by mountains. It has crime. And unemployment. And a little dereliction. Three reasons from a list of many why it has turned to culture for further salvation, and in 2008 will be the official non-European Union Capital of Culture. Oh dear! Just when Liverpool thought it had a clear run, along came Brussels and bestowed yet another Capital of Culture crown for the same year.

Country Information on Norway
Terrain
Glaciers of the Ice Age made a lasting impact on Norway's topography. Deep fiords partitioning the countryside in the west are a product of glacial mass flowing into rivers, deepening and broadening river beds (Sognefiord even extends to 204 km). Norway's highest elevations can be found in the south, e.g. Glittertind (2470 m). Areas along the coast in the south are characterized by three plains with intensive agricultural exploitation. The country's east is dominated by undulating hills and a few valleys. Northern Norway features fiords and mountain ranges, even one of Europe's biggest glacier areas. The country's biggest river is Glåma in the south-east.
Climate
Norway's climatic conditions are strongly influenced by maritime factors. Despite the country's location in the far north, winters are relatively mild, summers fairly cool. Average annual temperature ranges in Oslo are between -4.7°C and 17.3°C. Oslo's average annual precipitation is 740 mm.

Norway. T he demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas in March 2001 caused outcries of disgust around the world, including Scandinavia. Yet, at the same time, collectors and museums continued to drain Afghanistan of its cultural heritage. This article examines a Norwegian case, the first- to seventh-century ad fragments of Buddhist manuscripts from Afghanistan presently owned by the Norwegian businessman Mr Martin Schøyen. As widespread plundering is already a fact and valuable artefacts are in circulation, any line of action must represent a compromise between conflicting considerations. Organizations such as SPACH and the Afghan Museum in Exile have arrived at the conclusion that they must acquire important cultural artefacts themselves to secure their return to Afghanistan. This is, of course, a difficult policy to pursue, as it could stimulate black-market trading and plundering in Afghanistan (and other places). Still, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and UNESCO support this policy. In The Times (June 22, 2002) Colin Renfrew also suggested that the Schøyen manuscripts should be donated to the UNESCO-approved Afghan Museum in Exile.
  • Several examples of repatriation demonstrate that corrupt third world governments place antiquities back on the black-market.

Norway I n issue 11 (autumn 2002) of Culture Without Context we reported from the ongoing debate concerning the Schøyen Collection ( ). The Schøyen Collection, named after its owner, contains 12,500 manuscripts from the whole world, spanning 5000 years of human history. Our focus was on 1400 fragments, probably from Buddhist monastery libraries, for the most part smuggled out of Afghanistan during the Taliban regime and sold in London. Since then there have been some interesting developments. In the wake of the media coverage (January to March 2002) of the Schøyen Collection it seemed that a sale was imminent. In retrospect, the impression of urgency seems to have been created as part of a campaign to persuade the Norwegian government to buy the collection. He went on to state that a stable country, e.g. in the west or Japan, would be a suitable buyer, and that he intends to sell while he still has his health. He also says that he has received offers from museums in Europe. The Schøyen Collection under fire: Egyptian demands The Norwegian authorities refused to help us last time. If you are set on not doing anything, you will always be able to twist and turn and interpret treaties of this kind [the UNIDROIT 1995 Convention] so you do not have to do anything. It all depends on whether you actually want to do something. If the Norwegian authorities want to assist, they can manage to do so.
