The 'Land of the Midnight Sun' has delightfully long summer days, pleasantly low-key cities, unspoiled fishing villages and rich historic sites that include Viking ships and medieval stave churches. Norway Time and Date Norway Culture Back to Top Norway has preserved a valuable folk culture that retains elements from the Viking age. Norwegians today have a great interest in preserving folk art and music. The collecting and recording of folk music is supported by the government. Modern Norwegian culture has evolved from the great flowering of the arts that occurred in the 19th century under the determine of national romanticism. Early expressions of a truly Norwegian style were produced by painter Johan Christian Dahl and composer Edvard Grieg. Other valuable artists include playwright Henrik Ibsen, writer Knut Hamsun, composer Christian Sinding, painter Edvard Munch, and sculptor Gustav Vigeland, whose sculpture park in Oslo has gained international attention. Permanent theatres have been accomplished in several cities, and the state traveling theatre, the Riksteatret, organizes tours throughout the nation, giving as many as 1,200 performances annually. The Norwegian Opera, opened in 1959, requires state subsidies (as do most other theatres). Films in Norway are subject to censorship, primarily on grounds of violence and, to a lesser extent, erotic content. The production of Norwegian-made feature films is subsidized, but they usually number about 10 each year.

The origin of the first inhabitants of Norway is uncertain, but it seems likely that they traveled north from central Europe. The known history of the country begins in the 9th century AD and is based on the Viking sagas, supported by archaeological evidence, and the explorations of Viking adventurers who colonized the Scottish islands, parts of the Scottish and Irish mainlands, Iceland and (for a while) Greenland. Norway itself was divided into a number of fiefdoms; the unification process began with King Harald Fairhair, who defeated the major northern tribes at the battle of Hafrsfjord (near Stavanger) in 872. Over the next two centuries, Christianity gradually spread into the country, supplanting traditional beliefs in Norse gods. By 1060, the country was unified.

San Antonio This page was last updated by Carolynne White March 30, 2001 Even the potato, thought of as almost as Norwegian as brown goats' cheese, originally arrived from abroad. Norwegians celebrated the potato's 250th anniversary last year. What food, then, is Norwegian? Asked which dish we think of first as Norwegian, 65 per cent of us reply meatcakes, while 36 per cent think of lamb and cabbage stew and 23 per cent reply cod. A nationwide survey carried out in January 1994, in connection with the Government's promotion "Competitive Strategies for Norwegian Food", showed distinct regional preferences where dishes are concerned. While meatcakes rank first in all regions, westerners rank potato dumplings second, and Oslo-dwellers rank "lutefisk" (dried cod steeped in lye) third, just ahead of dried mutton ribs and fresh cod.
