Specific questions of interest include trace gas exchange in wetland systems, interactions between vegetation and hydrology and climate (weather), and modelling the impacts of climatic and land-use stresses on these linkages. Present research focuses on catchment hydrological processes and their influence on wetland permanence in stressed northern ecosystems (Western Boreal Forest, Arctic Tundra (Coppermine River region)). This involves combining theoretical, laboratory and fieldwork examining micrometeorological, hydrological and trace gas exchange in heterogeneous vegetated systems.

reported by Dean McGee In 1999, when the new territory of Nunavut was formed from the Northwest Territories, some thought was given to symbols for the rump NWT. This proposal symbolizes the geography of the NWT, and was designed by Robert Slaven, then a member of Yellowknife (NWT) city council. The proposal was found at http://members.shaw.ca/robertslaven/politics.htm Mr. Slaven, a former "Jeopardy!" champion, is a contestant on the current "Ultimate Jeopardy! Tournament", and has since moved to Surrey BC.

    Course Description and Objectives
This course is designed to acquaint students with some of the physical, biological, historical, political, economic and cultural characteristics of the Arctic, with an emphasis on the Canadian Arctic. Canada is an arctic country, with tundra landscapes covering more than 1/3 of our country; however, this is generally poorly known by "southern" Canadians. We will examine both the general characteristics of this vast area, and the inherent diversity. The division of the Northwest Territories in 1999 to create Nunavut , the Inuit-dominated territory in the eastern Arctic, and the Northwest Territories in the western Arctic comprised of a more diverse number of First Nations, brought much (if brief) attention to the Canadian North. Land claims by the First Nations in the north continue to shape the geography. We will explore the history and the challenges faced by northern territories and their people. The Arctic is also a barometer for global change; the predicted climate warming due to human-enhanced emissions of greenhouse gases, will be earliest and greatest in the high latitudes: in fact, changes are already being observed. For these and many other reasons, the Arctic makes an important subject of study.

A territory of northwest Canada east of Alaska. It joined the Confederacy in 1898. The region was first explored by fur traders in the 1840s and was acquired by Canada from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870. A land claim made by the Yukon tribe of Native Americans was approved by the federal government in 1991. Whitehorse is the capital and the largest city. Population: 31,200. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Yukon Territory, territory (1991 pop. 27,797), 207,076 sq mi (536,327 sq km), NW Canada. Geography and Climate The triangle-shaped Yukon territory is bordered on the N by the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean, on the E by the Northwest Territories, on the S by British Columbia and Alaska, and on the W by Alaska. The highest point in the Yukon is Mt. Logan, 19,551 ft (5,959 m) high, part of the Coast Ranges in the southwest. Although most of the territory is a watershed for the Yukon River and its tributaries, the northern and southeastern regions drain east into the Mackenzie River system. Immediately south of the desolate arctic coast the country is uninhabited and generally unknown. The other parts of the territory have great natural beauty, with snow-fed lakes backed by perpetually white-capped mountains and forests and streams abounding with wildlife. Kluane National Park (est. 1972) is in the St. Elias Mts. Winters are long and cold, with low humidity. During the short summers the longer day and surprisingly warm sun bring a profusion of wildflowers and enable the hardier grains and vegetables to mature.

THE ROLE OF FACTS ON THE CANADIAN NORTH
    Don C. Barnett
How important are facts when learning about a topic? First, facts can be fun. They can serve as mind-teasers. But this is the minor role of facts. Second, facts enable us to have a general knowledge about things. However, it is the third role of facts that is important. Facts become significant in learning when they relate to other ideas and help us understand important things about a topic like the Canadian North. Let`s use a few facts about Canada`s North to have a little fun. Test yourself. How much do you know about the North that land of northern forest, tundra, permafrost, and ice that lies north of the 60th degree of north latitude? Check an atlas so you know where the Northwest Territories is located then answer these questions. Check the answers that follow.

Caution urged with energy development in Canada
October 11, 2001 With Alaskan oil producers studying alternate routes to bring Alaskan gas to U.S. consumers, Northwest Territories and Yukon conservation groups are challenging governments and industry to support a set of six common principles to be followed in major oil and gas development in northern Canada. Groups supporting the principles are the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (Yukon and Northwest Territories chapters), Ecology North, Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, World Wildlife Fund Canada and Yukon Conservation Society. Expressing scepticism that large-scale development is desirable or necessary, the groups are urging that development proceed in a manner that most benefits northern Canadians while doing the least harm to the northern environment. Northern oil and gas production should also be considered a transitional measure, the groups argue, bridging to more sustainable energy generation and consumption measures. One proposed route of a gas pipeline would follow the Alaska Highway through Yukon Territory. The other would follow the Mackenzie Valley in the Northwest Territories, after connecting with an underwater pipe that would follow the arctic coast.
