V IRGINIA MOXHAM was a teenager when her daddy swept in from one of his wild northern adventures, having rafted down yet another uncharted river, to announce that he was leaving his wife for his secretary. The break with his family was permanent; Virginia (left, in 1928) only saw him once again.
Virginia Falls interrupts the icy flow of the South Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories. The man who founded this magazine, Charles Camsell, grew up in nearby Fort Liard, N.W.T., where his father was a fur trader. He heard stories in his boyhood about the falls. In later life, when Camsell was federal Deputy Minister of Mines, he got to know Hunter and told him about the thundering cataract on the South Nahanni.
As we reported in the May/June issue, it was Northwest Territories Deputy Premier Jim Antoine who first raised the idea of renaming Virginia Falls in honour of Pierre Trudeau. The former prime minister had paddled the South Nahanni in 1970 and, upon his return, had urged his officials to carve a national park out of the spectacular canyons that embrace the river.
Antoine has taken the sensible position that any change must first meet with the approval of the community of Nahanni Butte. It took generations for the people of the Northwest Territories to train Ottawa to consult them before federal officials made decisions on their behalf about the region. Communities across the Territories have earned the same consideration from Yellowknife.

Northwest Territories
The Atlas of Canada. Large portions were then sliced off to form the provinces of Manitoba (1870), Saskatchewan (1905) and Alberta (1905), as well as the territories of Yukon (1898) and Nunavut (1999). Other parts of the Northwest Territories were appended to Manitoba (1880, 1912), Ontario (1912) and Quebec (1912). The first white people arrived in the territories around the end of the eighteenth century as a result of the northward expansion of the fur trade, and trading posts were established in the Mackenzie River Valley in the early-nineteenth century. Researchers interested in ancestors who lived in the Northwest Territories use the main types of genealogical sources. The Northwest Territories Archives is the main repository of official records pertaining to the Territories' history. Particular attention should be paid to oral history records (sound recordings) and records dealing with the Aboriginal Peoples, the fur trade and the mining industry, which can be sources of genealogical information. The Northwest Territories Archival Network gives you access to other important resources held in many archives.

Geography
Diversity is the keynote of Canada's geography, which includes fertile plains suitable for agriculture, vast mountain ranges, lakes and rivers. Wilderness forests give way to arctic tundra in the Far North. Climate
There are of course many climatic variations in this huge country, ranging from the permanently frozen icecaps north of the 70th parallel to the luxuriant vegetation of British Columbia's west coast. On the whole, though, Canada has four very distinct seasons, especially in the regions lying along the U.S. border.

Northwest Territories
Two distinct geographics regions make up the Northwest Territories. First, there is the boreal forest. Boreal is a term relating to a forest in the northern North Temperate Zone that is mostly coniferous trees such as pine, spruce and fir. Referred to as taiga, it is the more southern "treed" portion of the area. The second area, known as the tundra is obvious from the stunted vegetation and rocks. The cold climate does not allow for a long growing season and although plants may be many years old, they are significantly smaller than their southern relatives.
