Geography and History
This region of Oceania consists of many hundreds of small islands spread over a large region of the western Pacific. The term "Micronesia" was first proposed to distinguish the region in 1831 by Jules Dumont d'Urville ; before this the term "Polynesia" was in use to generally describe the islands of the Pacific. Politically, Micronesia is divided between eight territories: Much of the area was to come under European domination quite early. Guam, the Northern Marianas, and the

Overview

This study covers the outlook products in Northern Mariana Island. For the year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the Northern Mariana Island (in millions of U.S. dollars). Comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge Northern Mariana Island vis-à-vis regional and global totals. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Project Discription@FY2001
Exchange projects that respect the values and cultural identity of each island society Exchange Media Personnel among the Pacific Island Region and Japan
Organizers: The Sasakawa Peace Foundation Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) Project period: The second year of an ongoing five-year project For FY2001:
Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as JapanÕs private sector continues to invest in these countries and more official development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999, the Fund implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which sought to promote understanding of Japan within the region. Thanks to the project's success, it was decided to follow up with the present five-year project.
This year it was planned to send three reporters from Japan's Okinawa Prefecture to Papua New Guinea, but because of the high risk of contracting malaria, the destination was changed to Fiji. The reporters covered ecotourism and ruins and wrote feature stories on those topics. In addition, the editor in chief of a newspaper and a senior journalist for a radio network in Papua New Guinea, as well as the publisher of a newspaper in Fiji, were invited to Japan. They covered the planned inauguration of direct flights between Japan and Papua New Guinea in April 2002 and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station, as well as the remote island community of Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture. Their reports were published in a Papua New Guinea national newspaper and transmitted throughout the Pacific region through various media.

Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as Japan's private sector continues to invest in these countries and more development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999 the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund (SPINF) implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which aimed to promote understanding of Japan within the region. This year, as the second phase of its efforts, SPINF launched this new project.
In conjunction with the second Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting (PALM 2000), which was organized by the Japanese government and held on April 22, SPINF invited eight journalists from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga to Japan. These journalists later wrote feature articles that were carried in local newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, and posted on the Internet. SPINF also sent three newspaper and television reporters from Miyakojima and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture to Palau in March 2001. These journalists interviewed the nation's new president and gathered material on a wide range of subjects, including environmental problems, the activities of Okinawans living in Palau, the island nation's traditional culture, and the current state of education. Upon returning to Japan, they produced features on Palau.

About Us National Council Conference ... Tennessee CNMI's Commonwealth Day
By Joe Takai- Soil Conservationist / APISEPM from Concord, CA Today is a very important day on the island where I come from. As some of you know, I am originally from the island of Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (C.N.M.I.). Saipan is about 125 miles north of Guam and is the Capital of the CNMI. Guam is the southern most islands in the Mariana Islands chain but is not a part of the CNMI. The natives of the Mariana Islands are called "Chamoru" or "Chamorro" and not Saipanese or Guamanian. I moved to California back in FEB 2002 to fill the soil conservationist position. Before then, I was the first ever "Coop-Student" in the Pacific Basin to work for the Soil Conservation Service (i.e. through a Cooperative Agreement between my high school and SCS) in 1991. I worked under the guidance of Charlie Frear (my first DC and now is the ASTC-FO for Georgia) and Joan Perry (retired Pacific Basin Director of many years and former Regional Conservationist for the West Region). I then moved on to the Guam Field Office as a SCEP while pursued my degree. Now I'm here... This region includes four island groups, namely the Caroline Islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Mariana Islands, and the Marshall Islands. Nauru is a part of this region, but it is isolated from any other island groups. The other aspect of this class is history. What is history? Generally, history comprises of the study of people and their deeds, places, historical events: past and present. Why do we need to learn history? Let’s look at two quotations that I think amplifies the need to learn history. Anyone who closes his eyes to the past is blind to the present.

National Archives and Records Administration, 1994
Introduction
Participation of ethnic and racial minorities in the civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's has heightened public interest in their unique histories and drawn attention to their contributions to the United States. The National ArchivesPacific Region, a repository for the historically valuable noncurrent records of the Federal Government, is a major source for research in ethnic studies. One of the National Archives and Records Administration's 13 regional archives, it maintains historical records of Federal agencies in northern California, Hawaii, Nevada, American Samoa, and the Pacific Trust Territories. The records contain valuable historical information relating to Native Americans, and Americans of African, Chinese, Hispanic, Japanese, Samoan, and other ancestry. Especially notable are records of the Federal district and appellate courts, U.S. Army, U.S. Attorneys and Marshals, Community Services Administration, Fair Employment Practices Committee (World War II), Farmers Home Administration, Government of American Samoa, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Navy, and microfilmed records of the Bureau of the Census.

Basic Geology of the Mariana Islands
The Mariana Islands are a classic example of an island arc, a curved line of stratovolcanoes that rise up from the ocean floor.
The Mariana trench, ridge, and islands. Based on Schmidt (1957), U.S. Geological Survey. The islands owe their origin to subduction, the tectonic process that thrusts one plate beneath another.
Simplified cross-section of the subduction zone of the Mariana arc. Based on earthquake locations in Samowitz and Forsyth (1981). The distribution of earthquakes reveals the location on the subducted Pacific Plate beneath the Mariana Islands. From the deep Mariana trench to a depth of about 100 km the plate is subducted at a gentle angle. From about 100 to 680 km the plate is subducted at a near vertical angle. Some geologists believe that the downward gravitational force of the steeply dipping plate is enough to pull the Pacific Plate away from the mid-ocean ridge, essentially providing a driving force for plate tectonics . Other geologists believe that the plates are pushed away from the mid-ocean ridge by forces generated at the ridge. Most geologists would agree that both forces are important. Special thanks to Frank Trusdell of the U.S. Geological Survey for providing most of the photos of the volcanoes in this region.
