It consists of five major volcanic islands and two coral atolls (see Figure 1) that lie in the heart of Polynesia, 2,500 miles south-southwest of Honolulu and 1,800 miles north-northeast of New Zealand. It is the only U.S. jurisdiction that lies south of the equator. Tutuila Island, which contains the historic capital of Pago Pago, the seat of government at Fagatogo, and the office of the Governor at Utulei, encompasses 70 percent of American Samoa's 77.3 square miles and over 95 percent of its 46,773 inhabitants (see Figure 1). In 1839, the visit of an American naval vessel marked the first official United States contact with this area. In 1872, the need for a coaling station brought about an agreement between the commander of the U.S. naval vessel Narragansett and the chief of Pago Pago; although the agreement was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, it prevented other nations from making claims on Pago Pago Harbor as international competition for bases in the South Pacific increased.

"Northern Peru has become a minefield for the media," the organisation said. "Harassment, intimidation and attacks against journalists have increased to such a degree that they threaten the freedom of the press. News Release January 6, 2005 Mariana Fruit Bat Now Protected Throughout Mariana Archipelago News Releases Home Page Search the News Releases Contacts Ken Foote 808 792 9535 or 282 9442 The Mariana fruit bat - a medium-sized bat found only in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) - has been reclassified from endangered to threatened status on Guam and newly listed as threatened in the CNMI, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today. Known as "fanihi" in the Chamorro language, the Mariana fruit bat was originally listed as endangered on Guam only, in the belief that bats on Guam formed a distinct and separate population from those in CNMI. Recent studies indicate the bats move from one island to another, linking these colonies as a single population. Because of the larger size of the total population, the species is being reclassified. "We believe that listing this species as threatened throughout its range will retain an appropriate level of protection throughout the Mariana Islands," said David B. Allen, Director of the Service's Pacific Region. "Our ultimate goal is to recover the species throughout the archipelago, so that future generations will still be able to see and enjoy this important part of the islands' culture." Currently, fewer than 100 individual Mariana fruit bats remain on Guam and a fluctuating population of 1,100 remains on Rota. In the northern islands (all islands north of Farallon de Medinilla) fewer than 5,000 individuals remain. On Saipan and Tinian, few individuals are known to inhabit or visit these islands.
