Pacific Service Region Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) , a chain of 17 volcanic islands, stretches over 375 miles north to south and covers a land area of 181 square miles. There are six inhabited islands, but most of CNMI's 69,221 (Census 2000, U.S. Bureau, IDB) people live on Saipan. Formerly a part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, CNMI opted in the 1970s to form closer ties with the U.S., becoming a commonwealth and a permanent part of the U.S. The people of CNMI are U.S. citizens. Tourism is a major industry and manufacturing is growing rapidly. Culture Language The Commonwealth has Chamorro, English, and Carolinian as its official languages. The program now has two instructors and an enrollment of 95 students out of 167 students on the Rota High School campus. The percentage of enrollment is 56.7 percent, an unusually high number in JROTC enrollment in the Pacific region and nation. Presently, the Rota High School Buck Battalion is estimated to be one of the top five enrollment out of 867 schools in the 1st Brigade, which includes the CNMI and other geographic entities. The instructors are Sergeant Major Atalig and First Sergeant Castro. On November 22, 1996, the Rota High School Buck Battalion completed its First Annual Formal Inspection by Sergeant General Major Patrick Lee from the 1st Brigade of the Cadet Command Headquarters. Reflections On Our Spanish Legacy: A Cultural Journey O Dewey at Manila That fateful first of May When you sank the Spanish squadron In almost bloodless fray, And gave your name to deathless fame; O, glorious Dewey, say, Why didn't you weigh anchor? and softly sail away. No one knows for sure what would have happened if, indeed, Commodore George Dewey had indeed sailed away, but it is safe to say that he would have been court martialed and thrown out of the Navy for disobeying his orders which were to remain and begin the siege of Manila and the ultimate conquest of the Philippines. This took place in May, 1898 and less than a month later, June 21, 1898 to be exact, four American war ships sailed into Guam, informed the stunned inhabitants there that the U.S. and Spain were at war, lowered the Spanish flag, raised the Stars and Stripes, took Governor Juan Marina (and others) prisoner of war and sailed softly away. Guam and its brothers and sisters in Rota, Tinian and Saipan were thus politically separated from each other to travel, so to speak, different political paths together and, as they say, the rest is history. Dewey's salvos in Manila brought to an end Spain's 230-year reign in the Pacific. While her political and economic sway over the islands was gone forever, she left behind a cultural legacy that still remains very much alive today in the cultures of the Chamorro and Carolinian people. This past November 5th and 6th, the NMI Council for the Humanities in association with the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture presented a symposium which brought the public together with a wide range of scholarshistorians, linguists, architects, ethnologists, clergymento take a cultural journey from the time before contact with the Europeans to the day Dewey dropped anchor in Manila bay. The south islands were occupied early, the north later. The ancient people evolved into Chamorro people. An ancient trading route between the central Carolinian islands brought ancestors of the Carolinians to Saipan. The first European to arrive in these islands was the Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, who came to Guam and Rota in 1521 during his circumnavigation of the world in an attempt to find a route across the Pacific. Spain took possession of the archipelago in 1565 and ruled it for more than 300 years. The first permanent Spanish colony was established in 1668. Spain ceded Guam to the United States following the Spanish-American War, then sold the Northern Mariana Islands to Germany in 1899. Germany acquired these islands primarily to increase their international prestige. German economic development was based on the copra industry. Japan took control of the Northern Mariana Islands in 1914, the first year of World War I. By ratification of the League of Nations in 1920, Japan received a mandate over the islands. This mandate lasted until 1945 with 30,000 Japanese nationals residing on Saipan. The Japanese developed the island largely for sugar production and processing.

The predominant religion of the Northern Marianas is Roman Catholic, especially among the Chamorros and Filipino immigrants. This early group of Chamorros are responsible for the 'latte stones' found throughout the Marianas. Reaching as high as 20ft (6m), these limestone posts are capped with a piece of limestone or brain coral in the shape of a large bowl. Ferdinand Magellan named the islands the Islas de los Ladrones (Islands of Thieves) in 1521; they were renamed Las Marianas upon the arrival of Spanish priest Luis Diego Sanvitores, in honor of the Spanish queen Maria Ana of Austria. In 1668, Sanvitores and five other Jesuits established the first mission in the Marianas, touching off two decades of hostilities between the priests and less-than-welcoming Chamorros. Spanish troops managed to quell the uprising in the late 1680s. In the hopes of more effectively converting the Chamorros, the Spanish relocated most of them to Guam. Most of the natives on Rota, however, managed to hide out in the hills and avoid capture, and today the Chamorros on Rota are the least mixed in the Marianas. Around 1820, the Spanish allowed islanders from the western Carolines to move to the larger Mariana Islands. The Carolinians managed Spanish cattle herds and maintained a presence in the Marianas at a time when Spain was concerned over German intentions in the area.
