Geography
Korea's geography influences its history and culture.
Republic of Korea Korea is a rugged peninsula lying between China on the west and north and Japan to the east. The whole Korean peninsula is about 85,500 square miles, about the size of Utah. South Korea is only 99,000 square miles roughly similar to Oregon and its population is close to 50 million (Compared to Oergon's 3 million). Mountains and hills make up about 70 percent of the country. Sunset on Cheju Island Farming and Fishing:
Until modern times, Koreans lived in small farming communities that were mainly concentrated in the few good arable parts of the peninsula. Although Located at the same latitude as both St. Louis and San Francisco, mountains and frigid arctic winds from the north give Korea cold winters. Preserved and pickled foods, prepared In Anticipation of the cold winters, are characteristics of Korean cooking. Cold weather and farm work make for hearty food. Unlike neighboring Japan or China, a Korean breakfast, for instance, might be a big bowl of Tripe Soup or Beef Rib Soup with lots of rice. Its Peninsular Location gives Koreans three different seas from which to gather fish- the Yellow Sea, the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan), and the unique micro environment where the two seas come together at the south end of the peninsula. Seafood is a feature of Korean life and no table is ever without a bowl of tiny dried and salted fish, even for breakfast.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: Following World War II, Korea was split with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western oriented. KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population, while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In December 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-1953), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the Peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 20 times the level of North Korea. South Korea has maintained its commitment to democratize its political processes. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Dae-jung and the North's leader KIM Chong-il. TOP OF PAGE

    South Korean Geography
The economy of South Korea is dominated by the chaebol or business conglomerates. These conglomerates control all aspects of the supply production, from obtaining raw materials to marketing the final product. Most industries are located in urban areas in the northwest and southeast. While industry has dominated the economy, a growing labor movement is currently affecting both production and costs of products. The high standard of living in South Korea has created both growing consumer demand for products and labor demands for increased wages and benefits. Transportation and communication facilities in South Korea are modern and excellent. It has an extensive paved road system with modern highway buses that reach virtually every corner of the country. The rail system is extensive and well maintained; major cities have excellent and far reaching subway systems which connect to the rail network. All major and many minor centers are served by airports; a new, state of the art, International airport was recently opened in Incheon which is one of the most modern airports in the world. Virtually all families have telephones and Korea is reportedly the country with the highest percentage of people, over 75%, having cell phones. Children as young a 5 routinely bring cell phones to classes and Koreans use them in all public venues.

Geography The Democratic People's Republic of Korea shares borders in the north with China, in the east with the Sea of Japan, in the west with the Yellow Sea and in the south with the demilitarised zone (separating it from the Republic of Korea). Most of the land consists of hills and low mountains and only a small area is cultivable. Intensive water and soil conservation programmes, including land reclamation from the sea, are given high priority.
