CULTURE Language Korean is a Ural-Altaic language. It is related to Japanese and remotely related to Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, and Mongolian. Although dialects exist, the Korean spoken throughout the peninsula is mutually comprehensible. In the DPRK, the Korea alphabet (hangul) is used exclusively, unlike in the Republic of Korea where a combination of hangul and Chinese characters is used as the written language. Religion Korea's traditional religions are Buddhism and Shamanism. Christian missionaries arrived as early as the 16th century but it was not until the 19th century that they founded schools, hospitals, and other modern institutions throughout Korea. Major centers of 19th century missionary activity included Seoul and Pyongyang, and there was a relatively large Christian population in the north before 1945. Although religious groups exist in North Korea, most available evidence suggests that the government severely restricts religious activity.

The USA is the key, however, as North Korea is desperate for aid from the international financial community, and needs US acquiescence.

    Culture Shock in North Korea
So begins this article in Newsweek about North Korea's slow, yet steady opening to the world, depite the best efforts of Kim Jong-Il. Here's another paragraph I found interesting: The changes are real. Just take the story of Lee So Young (not her real name), a 33-year-old mother of one who defected from North Korea five years ago. She's one of an estimated 200,000 North Koreans living illegally in the border area. She's hiding in the Chinese city of Yanji as she awaits a chance to reach a new home in South Korea. In her account, it's money, not ideology, that does the talking inside North Korea these days. That's what helped her to cross the border seven times in five years. "The border guards are completely corrupt," she says. "Even South Koreans can go in if they want. All you have to do is give them some money." Not so sure that I'll test that one personally, but I believe it. Heck, money speaks volumes in South Korea, so why should it be different north of the DMZ? It's when you read articles like these that you start thinking that there's the faintest glimmer of hope after all and that maybe, just maybe, those people who claimed the north would fall naturally sooner than later were right after all. I loved this quote from Andrei Lankov:

Media Files UNSUNG HEROES http://www.kimsoft.com/2004/UnsungHeroes.htm Unsung heroes is an epic tale about the gruelling and valuable work that North Korean agents had to do in the U.S occupied South during the war. This is basically the North Korean version of 007 however it is much more interesting because a great deal of the story is based on actual facts and real agents with real missions and it is just generally more realistic (of course it doesn't take very much to be more realistic than James Bond ;-) ). You can buy the whole thing on VHS (20 hours long) from the KPEA in Korea!

News Bulletin Current Affairs World War II ... Mobile Goethe Lands in North Korea The Goethe Institute is coming. After years of delicate negotiation Germany's Goethe Institute is becoming the first western cultural institute to open a reading room in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a major cultural coup.
Located in a cultural center in the middle of the city, the Goethe Institute's reading room is about 150 square meters (1,615 square feet) in size and contains 8,000 books, magazines, CDs and videos. On June 3, the unprecedented project will be opened in Stalinism's last stronghold by a German delegation that includes the Goethe Institute's president, Jutta Limbach. "The opening of the center is a big success for our cultural policies," Limbach (photo) said in a statement. "Culture and education can achieve many things which politics alone cannot. It is our interest to use the existing possibilities for a free flow of information anywhere in the world. It is a big step forward that we have now found partners in North Korea."
