11 February 2002 Conference theme: EXPLORING NEW PATHWAYS TO INFORMATION
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set off with the Corps of Discovery 14 March 1804 from St. Louis and returned to St Louis 22 September 1806. They traversed, refined the map and in part did new mapping, described flora and fauna, met members of at least 47 Indian tribes and covered parts of what are the modern-day states of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. That would be 5 of MPLA's 12 states. Jean Hatfield took very good notes on the Fargo conference planning meeting at the Fargo Plaza Suites. Joe Edelen had a conference call with us and answered our most pressing questions. We also talked briefly with Pamela Drayson, Director of Libraries at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, who offered any help from her and her staff members that we might need in planning and giving the conference and made some suggestions of possible session topics and presenters. The Dakota Resource Council was established in 1978. The South Agassiz Resource Council is now forming in the Fargo area. Terry Schaunaman from Dakota Resource Council spoke with Kim Christianson from the State of North Dakota Department of Commerce Energy Office, who was very interested in an energy efficient sustainable design for the Fargo Public Library project. State and federal technical assistance may be provided and there is a possibility of some funding for the project. North Dakota State University Architecture professor, Darryl Booker presented information pertaining to sustainable design. The US Green Building Council has compiled a common language for designers and end users to discuss green or environmentally responsible design. Green design includes sustainable site planning, water safeguarding, energy efficiency, conservation of materials, and indoor environmental quality. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, was created to define Green as a standard and transform the marketplace. LEED covers many different types of buildings including new construction, existing buildings, commercial interiors, core and shell projects, and homes. Through a rating system, a project may earn points to denote the project as certified, silver, gold or platinum level certification.

History
UND was founded six years before North Dakota even became a state. Grand Forks native George H. Walsh submitted a bill to the Territorial Legislature of Dakota Territory in 1883 that called for a university in Grand Forks. The university was viewed by many as the premier state institution to be given to a community; even more so than the state capitol. The first building at UND was Old Main. It housed all classrooms, offices, dorm rooms, and a library. In the

University of North Dakota
Grand Forks, ND In June 1968, the Government Printing Office approved the creation of the first joint regional depository library. The University of North Dakota (UND), Chester Fritz Library and the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Library have for the last thirty years shared the responsibility of providing Government publications to the state of North Dakota. Chester Fritz Library and the North Dakota State University Library Directors wrote to the Government Printing Office, "We have investigated the implications of this proposal and believe that it will prove to be in the best interests of the two Universities and the State of North Dakota." From its inception in North Dakota, the shared regional depository has shown itself to be an effective organizational model. Over the course of 30 years, as Government information expanded exponentially, it became increasingly difficult for depositories to meet the Government information demands of a varied population. The joint regional depository structure of shared responsibility can serve to lighten the burden. It has allowed this sparsely populated state to develop a comprehensive collection of Government information, with an effective delivery system. NDSU and UND have been able to fulfill this major function of regional depository libraries as well as serve the needs of their respective campuses.

July 24, 1997
State Library Board Members Darleen Gage, Chair Joe Van De Rostyne Richard Van Beek Kay Riter Warren Wilson TECHNOLOGY RETROSPECTIVE BUILDING ON A FIRM FOUNDATION South Dakota has a long history of multitype library cooperation and use of technology to deliver library services. Since the establishment of the State Library in 1913, the State Library has encouraged libraries of all types to cooperate together. The result is a strong network of public libraries, academic libraries (private and public), special libraries, school libraries and the state library working together to provide interlibrary loan and other direct services throughout the state to smaller libraries and citizens without library service at no charge to the end user. Many communities across the state have overnight delivery of interlibrary loan requests by courier and same day delivery by fax. Library patrons seldom wait more than three (3) days for delivery of an interlibrary loan book if the book is available in state. By the mid-1970s a TWX system linked the major public libraries and the academic libraries throughout the state. During that same period, the State Library used federal funds to encourage academic and larger public libraries to begin the process of converting their library holdings into machine readable (MARC) catalog records using OCLC. For many years the State Library funded the basic fees for OCLC membership for South Dakota libraries who were willing to participate in building a database of MARC (machine readable) records. During the same time period, South Dakota began contracting with MINITEX, a regional consortium, for interlibrary loan access to the University of Minnesota collections.
