Description
Long the exclusive home of the Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Cree, Crow, Mandan and Sioux Indians, their land would soon be lost as America expanded into the west.
In 1805, the courageous Lewis and Clark expedition wound its way up the Missouri River, and seven years later, word of their discoveries was spreading and Scottish and Irish colonists arrived in the area.
As the Indian wars were ending, the U.S. Homestead Act of 1863 was a catalyst for more settlers to make the journey west.
This onetime home to buffalo and endless fields of wheat, is famed for the Badlands a 380 sq. mile land of deep gullies, land crests and pinnacles, all formed by centuries of river erosion.
The Red River Valley, a somewhat narrow fertile strip of land along its border with Minnesota, is home to 40% of the state's population and much of its agriculture industry.
In North Dakota the history of the development of America is easily found across its windswept plains, and along the historic path of the Missouri River.

Hours and Contacts Family History and Genealogy Room The Family History and Genealogy Room houses a variety of primary and secondary resources useful to family historians. Primary materials are regional in scope and emphasize North and South Dakota, as well as Minnesota. The records include Federal Manuscript Population Census Schedules from 1840 to 1920, Ontario and Manitoba Provincial Population Census Schedules from 1831 to 1891, North Dakota and western Minnesota Land Tract Books, the Ontario Computerized Land Record Index, American Lutheran Church Records for North Dakota, and naturalization records for several Red River Valley counties. The Family History Room also contains over 5,600 volumes of published material. These secondary sources document the state's three major ethnic groups: Scandinavians (in particular the Norwegians), Canadians of English, Irish and Scottish descent, and Germans from Russia. In addition, the Department contains other items of interest to family history researchers, such as church, county and city anniversary books; histories of North Dakota, some of which contain biographical sketches; city and telephone directories; published family histories and genealogies; and various bibliographies.
