Offices Partners Family Preparedness and Response Katrina is the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Camille in 1969. It is estimated to be the costliest natural disaster in United States history, and its toll on families and on the nation is mounting. Families are seeking out information on managing the emotional and financial challenges they face in the wake of this disaster. Being prepared for disasters and knowing how to respond when they occur helps children families cope with a wide variety of stressors and challenges. Land-grant university researchers and extension educators of the Cooperative Extension System (CES) and CSREES are guiding families—especially those with children—to research-based resources on the Web, through classes and workshops, and through extension office resources to assist them through this tragedy. Examples of these resources include: Disaster Preparedness Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) is a collaborative multistate effort by extension services across the country to improve the delivery of services to citizens affected by disasters. CSREES provides support through a cooperative agreement. The EDEN Web site is designed to serve extension agents and educators by providing them access to resources on disaster preparedness, recovery, and mitigation that will enhance their short- and long-term programming efforts.

The philosophy of the Student Financial Aid Office is that the primary responsibility for financing a college education lies with the student and his or her family. University aid is viewed only as a supplement to the family support. The amount of the student's financial need is based on the difference between anticipated educational expenses for the school year and a reasonable contribution from the total family and student financial resources. In determining the resources of the student and his/her family, the four major sources are: (1) family income, (2) family assets, (3) student's income and (4) student's assets. Financial aid falls into one of four categories: grants, loans, employment or scholarships:

This collection of readings is provided to the participants of the 2005 NW Network Institute, held August 8-10 at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. The theme of the institute was "Using Research to Build Strong Communities." The second day of the institute included indepth issue sessions related to a number of topics of interest to the service community in Washington and Oregon. This is not an exhaustive list of all the data and research on these topics. Rather these documents are provided as a supplement to your institute experience.
Featured Reading
  • Poverty study presented at the NW Network Institute by David Harrison of the University of Washington.
The Northwest Area Foundation prepared a study that examines the causes of poverty and reviews the programs designed to alleviate its effects on people. emphasizes the complexities of poverty and suggests that poverty-reduction efforts be integrated to be successful for the long term. The report analyzes data from the Northwest region served by the Foundation, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. Its key argument is that the multiple factors causing poverty too often are overlooked by well-intentioned poverty-reduction programs, and that such programs would have more success in addressing these complexities if the programs were better integrated.
