Academic Regulations Attendance The participation of students in all regularly scheduled classes is considered an important part of the academic procedure. It is assumed that students will conscientiously fulfill this responsibility when classes are scheduled and will contribute to class activities. An instructor may consider irregular attendance in his evaluation of students' educational achievement. Students are responsible for ascertaining attendance requirements for each course in which they are enrolled. Specific policies related to excused and unexcused absences can be found in the Student Handbook. Additional copies of this may be obtained by contacting the Student Housing Director's office. Grades Tentative grades are reported at midterm to assist students in gauging their effort for the remainder of the term. At the completion of each course the student is given a grade: A, B, C, D, or P for passing work; I for incomplete work; and F for failure. The grade "incomplete" is given only at the end of a semester in which the student, for justifiable reasons in the opinion of the professor, is unable to complete the course. If an incomplete course is not completed within four weeks of the next resident semester after the grade was given, or if an incomplete course is not completed within one semester by a student not in residence, the grade will be that which the professor submitted based on the assumption that the student received failing grades or zero points for all uncompleted work. Exceptions to this rule will be made only when there exist reasons clearly beyond the control of the student, and the student, with the professor's approval, has petitioned the office of Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs for an extension of time. The Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs may grant an extension of time or a replacement of the incomplete with a W (Withdrawn).

Recognized as the most comprehensive youth hunting program anywhere in North America, the youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is NRA's "graduate studies" program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters. Open only to those who have completed hunter-safety training at the state-or provincial-level, the program is conducted under simulated hunting conditions to provide the best practical environment for reinforcing and testing a young hunter's skills. From rifle, bow and muzzleloader shooting at life-sized targets, to wildlife identification, to map-and-compass orienteering and more, YHEC participants get hands-on training in eight skills areas, giving them expertise in all methods of take and all types of game. State- and provincial-level YHEC programs, hosted by volunteer instructors, draw an estimated 50,000 youths each year. Top ranked individuals advance to the annual NRA International Youth Hunter Education Challenge, the pinnacle of the program. Since its inception in 1985, YHEC has reached more than a million young sportsmen and women.

A 50 State Survey of Requirements for the Education of Language Minority Children
    November 1997
By Anita Garcia and Cynthia Morgan Ms. Garcia and Ms. Morgan are Adjunct Fellows at the Center for Equal Opportunity in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Garcia is also a scholar at the University of California at Berkeley for the Foundation for Teaching Economics.
Ms. Morgan is also an Ashbrook scholar at Ashland University. Introduction Schools around the United States are now faced with education a growing number of children who lack basic English skills. According to the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education , there are 2,437,723 Limited English Proficiency students in the U.S.1 Only a few years ago, many schools had never dealt with a language minority child. Today, an increasing number do. The challenge of providing a quality education to all students is doubled when schools must also teach a child an entire new language as well as academic courses. Over the last 30 years, elected officials, education agencies, and the courts have established guidelines for the education of these students. Federal requirements allow states a wide deal of latitude in selecting the most effective programs for their limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. Many states have enacted their own laws governing the management and style of programs for LEPs. These laws have been developed in cooperation with, or under coercion from, federal agencies and/or activist organizations. The result has been a patchwork of laws and regulations that can vary greatly from state to state.
