These universities will refine and disseminate online modules that prepare teacher candidates to engage parents in the education of P-12 students. Modules that reflect the areas for parent involvement articulated by Epstein and the National PTA standards will be piloted in partner site programs with attention to their contribution to development of candidate attitudes, knowledge, and skills that promote parental engagement across cultures. The North Texas Partnership for Parent Engagement, a grant funded by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Metropolitan Life Foundation project, originally developed six online modules embedded in courses of initial teacher education programs. The curriculum reflects the areas for parent involvement originally articulated by Dr. Joyce Epstein of Johns Hopkins University. These areas (parenting, communication, learning at home, volunteering, advocacy, and community) also form the basis for the National PTA standards for parent involvement. Five of the six modules developed were pilot tested by faculty in teacher education classes. Results of pre-and post-tests showed improved scores for most of the soon-to-be teachers at the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington.

For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children North Dakota
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002
Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. North Dakota has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in North Dakota and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in North Dakota The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*

The Child Care Partnership Project
North Dakota Infant/Toddler Enrichment Program
Description In North Dakota, attitudes about child care are changing. By teaching the teachers, the Infant/Toddler Enrichment Program is helping to improve the quality of child care throughout the state. Anyone who takes care of infants and toddlers is a target for the program. A network of child care trainers works to educate caregivers and parents, and encourages the long-term retention of child care workers. "You can’t believe the difference in child care," said one trainer. "The women’s attitudes about the importance of the job, using the knowledge, the atmosphere. . .the interaction is different." Partners The members of the Infant/Toddler Enrichment Program include:
  • The Bush Foundationa regional foundation supporting similar efforts in Minnesota and South Dakota; The North Dakota Department of Human Services (NDDHS); Tribal nations (Three Affiliated Tribes, Spirit Lake Tribe, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe); WestEd Laboratory of Californiaa non-profit research, development, and service agency dedicated to improving education and other opportunities for children, youth, and adults;
