Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Forum MANDAREE, ND - Alex Gwin stands behind the lectern and asks his high school students what sounds like a disarmingly simple question: "What day of the week is it?" But he asks the question in Hidatsa, not English, and they have to answer in Hidatsa. One student needs to be reminded that the Hidatsa have a different start to the week. "Sunday's not the first day of the week," Gwin says in English. "Monday is." The Hidatsa words "Dami mape" ripple around the room. Third day, Wednesday. The Hidatsa language classes at the school in Mandaree operate as close as possible to immersion. If a student wants to be excused to go to the restroom, he or she had better have a strong bladder or be able to ask permission in Hidatsa.

Children on the Crow Indian Reservation will now have computer access, learn how to handle money, and research information on businesses. The center houses a "little people trading post," where children will sell arts and crafts they learn to make. "Some kids are not familiar with money," said Susan Kelly. "This not only teaches them how to make money, but how to take care of it." The center will also begin packaging and distributing roasted coffee. "Black water," as tribal members refer to it, was the first food given to them from the settlers, Kelly said. The center also will offer legal, business and housing advice. The new resource center was partly funded with a grant from Running Strong for American Indian Youth. The Center Pole Foundation will oversee operations.
    Boarding schools coming back
Once spurned by rural parents, who hated sending their children hundreds of miles from home for a high school education, boarding schools are making a comeback in Alaska. In 1994, the only boarding school operating in Alaska was Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka. Now full-time residential schooling is offered in Bethel in western Alaska, and in Galena and Nenana in the Interior. "It's not anything like what the boarding schools used to be," said Ralph Lindquist, dean of students at the Nenana school. "I think we're giving a lot of kids and parents an alternative to something they're not satisfied with." About 520 students attended boarding schools full time in Alaska this past school year. That's about 240 more than were enrolled a decade ago.

    http://www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu/~mmagouli/nahist.htm
The bloody rout of 1890 gave tragic evidence that the old ways were gone; in their place came the challenge to Indians to adapt or vanish. The siege of 1973 had proved, at least, that they had done neither. In fact, the Indian population had more than tripled since 1890, when it stood at 250,000. And Indians seemed less inclined than ever to turn away from their ancient sense of tribal belonging. Their journey through history has not yet ended. They strive to prolong it, and to discover its meaning. ~ Vine Deloria, Jr., 1974 A Brief History of Assimilation and the Struggle for Recuperation The history of European and American relations with the Native people they found on this continent is complex and multi-faceted. Certainly there were periods of friendly relations, sharing of land, goods, and lives, sometimes for periods of up to a hundred years in a given region. But in virtually every case, we (Americans) ultimately let greed and a sense of superiority dominate. Libraries and archives are replete with accounts of the brutality, humiliation, unfairness, racism, and countless crimes small and large suffered by Native peoples everywhere in this country at the hands of European and American people and governments. The well-documented programs of genocide and assimilation perpetrated by our government were both random and systematic. Perhaps the most thorough such attempt at assimilation to eliminate Native American culture came in the form of boarding schools, seemingly helpful from some perspectives, but overtly and insidiously harmful to individuals, families, and communities. Anthropologist James Cleland summarizes the situation in Michigan:

    Joe McLellan
    Profile by Dave Jenkinson.

Storyteller, author and teacher, Joe McLellan was born September 27, 1945, in Monterey, California. "Monterey's actually where my mom was from. My dad was an officer in the Marine Corps, and he met my mom before World War II. They got married when he got his only leave during the war. I guess I was conceived on their honeymoon. The war got over just in time for my dad to get back and have my mom, eight months pregnant, greet him. They stayed in Monterey for a while and then moved up to Bend and Madras, Oregon, by the Warm Springs Reserve. My dad was originally from western Oregon, the area around Le Grand, Pendleton and the Umatilla Reserve. Often I spent time with my grandparents, and, through spending that time with them, I think I acculturated a little bit into the Nez PercŽ way. Having an aboriginal background and sort of an Irish- Catholic background always brought about great confusions. There's all kinds of contradictions and culture clashes." "A few things were important to me growing up. One of them was stories. When I was young, my dad would always tell me stories, and my grandparents and great-grandma always told me both histories of the family and stories, and I'd sort of 'trance-out'. I think a good storyteller puts you in a 'trance,' and I'd go there. When I started school, I already knew how to read a little bit. A lot of things happened in school that I didn't like. It was hard for me to establish my identity, to know who I was, and seeing how Indian kids were treated was hard for me. I was sort of caught in between, the situation of not being respected by either because you're neither."

    The tapestry of Indian ancestry
Data offer first look at diversity of Native American lineage
By KAREN IVANOVA Tribune Regional Editor BROWNING Carol Juneau can count a lot of nations on her family tree. A state representative from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Juneau is half Hidatsa-Mandan and half Norwegian. Her husband, Stan, is mostly Blackfeet, but also claims Tlingit-Haida blood from Alaska, Oneida blood from Wisconsin and French and English ancestry. The couple's two adult children, Juneau quips, are "very multi-tribal." Such rich heritage among Montana's Indian population is documented for the first time in new Census 2000 statistics. The numbers reflect, in part, how government policy, economics and cultural revival have scattered Native Americans far beyond the borders of their reservations. Tribal nations, meanwhile, are grappling with sticky questions about how such intertribal and interracial mixing redefines who is Indian.
