Greensboro, North Carolina Teacher Named Regional Winner in National Epidemiology Competition
April 27, 2004 GREENSBORO, N.C. - A Greensboro teacher has been named a regional winner in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Teacher Competition for developing a high school curriculum in which students combine geography and high-tech mapping to study local public health issues. Laura Hendrix, who teaches courses in biology, chemistry, and infectious diseases at Greensboro Day School, will receive a $5,000 award for her entry, entitled "The Geography of Public Health: GIS and Epidemiology." GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems, a system of computer software, hardware, and data used to analyze a particular geographical location. Hendrix's curriculum provides an introduction to the use of GIS technology in the study of public health issues, using the community of Greensboro as a model. After obtaining data about public health issues from city and county agencies, students "visualize" the data by producing maps using GIS technology. Students then "layer" a variety of maps to examine relationships between health issuessuch as obesity, cancer, crime, and STD prevalenceand socioeconomic and environmental data such as attained education level, income, poverty rate, and proximity to toxic release sites. Prior to obtaining her teaching certification, Hendrix worked for several years in HIV/AIDS research, including 3 years in Africa running a laboratory for a project in Uganda with the British Medical Research Council.

Law increases pathways to teacher certification
By Brock Vergakis
The Sun News
SHALLOTTE, N.C.
Filling teacher vacancies in Brunswick County, N.C., could become a little easier in the future because of a bill recently signed into law. The state's community colleges are now allowed to provide course work for those to become teachers through what are known as lateral-entry programs, designed for those with a four-year college degree from another profession who still need teacher certification. North Carolina needs to hire more than 11,000 teachers every year to accommodate growth and replace teachers who move elsewhere or retire, according to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

A s we mature we think about the teachers who have inspired us to reason, to question, and to create. Good teachers are as varied as the methods they use, but they have common characteristics. They are caring individuals, they want to make a difference in the lives of others, and they never stop learning themselves.

Meeting Licensure Requirements Because no college or university in Virginia offers a major in education, students seeking teacher licensure major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline and also take a sequence of education courses. When you graduate from Hollins, you'll be prepared to meet licensure requirements in Virginia and most other states. Hollins began the first graduate program in the Roanoke Valley to allow college graduates in the liberal arts to earn teaching licensure and a master of arts in teaching at the same time.
Students may seek endorsements in elementary education (prek-6), or in the following areas in secondary education: art (prek-12), biology (6-12), chemistry (6-12), computer science (6-12), English (6-12), French (prek-12), German (prek-12), Spanish (prek-12), Latin (prek-12), history and social sciences (6-12), mathematics (6-12), choral music (prek-12), and physics (6-12).
The Hollins Program Education courses emphasize content knowledge, principles of teaching and learning, and specific skills. Not only will you learn more about art, history, math, science, and other disciplines yourself, but you'll also learn how to present these subjects to children in ways that encourage their interest in learning.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
