THE ALLURE OF LIGHT RAIL
A substantial distraction bedazzles officials in the State Formerly Known As the 'Good Roads' State
John Locke Foundation , North Carolina's leading think tank, shows the road out of the mess.
Lawmakers have decided that pseudoephedrine, sold under the brand name Sudafed, presents a danger to the public because it can be converted to methamphetamine. What has happened with Sudafed is truly a tale of the unintended consequences of the 'war on drugs,' creating secondary consequences in other markets. Learn More
Light-Rail Projections Disappoint Feds
Even while North Carolina's three largest metro areas try to boost their "world class city" credentials with new light-rail transit systems, ridership trends suggest that such prestige projects will only aggravate already-spiraling costs. Nowhere is this more evident than in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, where the Triangle Transit Authority is the lead agency for a regional light-rail system that is supposed to cost about $630 million. Learn More
Municipal Leaders Should Abandon Light Rail
Current light-rail proposals in North Carolina are being built to serve less that 1 percent of the commuting population. The cost ranges from $370 million for 10 miles in Charlotte and $888 million for 34 miles in Raleigh are ridiculous compared to building and maintaining roads. But the money for light rail will come from the same pool of money to build and maintain local roads.

The Colonial Period.
Lincoln County was born mid the throes of the American Revolution, and christened for a patriot soldier, then battling for independence. Prior to that time, while Carolina was a Province of Great Brittain, in the bestowal of names there was manifest a desire to please royalty: New Hanover was called for the House of Hanover Bladen , in honor of Martin Bladen

For anyone who loves the outdoors, North Carolina's abundance of public land is almost an embarrassment of riches. Consider: This state is home to four national forests , covering a total of 2,954,000 acres. We also have the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores, sporting 126 miles of pristine beaches. We share with Tennessee the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our share being 275,895 acres, or about 53 percent of the park. We have ten national wildlife refuges covering...? We have 35 state parks, recreation areas, and natural areas totaling 116,890 acres. (On second thought, we could use some more state park acreage.) Add to this the parkland owned by various local governments and tracts owned by private land trusts.
