a non-profit organization providing free online help for science fair students, and have recently received a support grant from EMC Corporation to specifically target the science population in North Carolina schools. By partnering with scientific companies, we obtain valuable resources from their employees in developing our materials, as well as monetary funding. We offer Starter Kits (science fair project outlines), a Topic Selection Wizard, an Ask an Expert forum for specific questions, and many other reference sources. We are hoping to connect with teachers and students in North Carolina, as we currently serve students across the country and are looking to expand our reach beyond the 212,000 students who registered with us during the 2004-2005 school year.

The General Assembly receives from the governor a copy of David Walker's Appeal . . . to the Coloured Citizens of the World, published in Boston the previous year by David Walker, an African American born free in Wilmington in 1785. Appalled by slavery, he advocates open rebellion. The General Assembly bans his writings, as well as other "seditious" works that "might excite insurrection."
The General Assembly enacts "black codes" restricting the activities of free and enslaved African Americans in an effort to prevent slave revolts.
The General Assembly passes legislation forbidding black preachers to speak at gatherings of slaves from different owners, and forbidding anyone to teach slaves to read and write.
The state constitution is extensively revised, with amendments that provide for direct election of the governor and more democratic representation in the legislature. However, new laws take voting rights away from free people of color.

Dear Governor Hunt, In addition to these efforts to create and promote rigorous standards that would increase the level of professional competency among teachers, your administration can also take credit for bringing the state's standard course of study (SCS) into alignment with those standards, as well as principles drawn from "recent research on how students learn" (NCDPI 2001a). This alignment required a major revision of the SCS, transforming it "from a detailed, prescriptive curriculum to a more flexible guide to instruction... focusing on themes and concepts rather than isolated facts [and] emphasizing thinking skills and problem solving more than the memorization and recall of information" (NCDPI 2001a). The revised SCS's "Philosophy and Rationale" (NCDPI 2001a) has called for teachers to develop an "integrated curriculum" that:
