The Neuropsychological Basis of the Broad Autism Phenotype
Specific Aims:
  • To examine whether autistic individuals and their relatives differ from typically-developing individuals on selected neuropsychological measures of social cognition, central coherence and executive function.
  • To elucidate the neuropsychological basis of the broad autism phenotype by examining the relationship of clinically-based measures of the broad autism phenotype (that we have used in family studies of autism for 15 years) to selected neuropsychological measures.
  • To compare performance of autistic individuals and their parents to that of individuals known brain lesions on measures of social cognition, executive function and central coherence, to gain insights into the neural basis of these deficits.

    The State of Minds

Today a dare-to-dream attitude is sparking innovation and driving North Carolina's economy to new heights.
North Carolina's success in economic development is grounded in innovation, a quality that business leaders around the world understand and appreciate. This quest for innovation flows naturally from the establishment, more than 40 years ago, of an audacious enterprise: the Research Triangle Park (RTP).
In cutting-edge industry sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and software, North Carolina stands among the top markets nationally. As a global high-tech destination, North Carolina truly earns the designation "The State of Minds."
    An Innovative Future
North Carolina's economy is undergoing a breathtaking transformation. Its foundation of agriculture and traditional manufacturing industries, maintained in the 20th century, is giving way to the technology industries of the new millennium. As a result, the Brookings Institution has ranked The Research Triangle Park area the fourth largest biotechnology center in the U.S. The state ranks first in the southeastern U.S., and in the top ten nationally, in locating pharmaceutical biotechnology companies. Seven of the world's largest pharmaceutical firms have a presence in the state.

    The Regions in Brief
The High Country The Blue Ridge Parkway seems to touch the sky as it traces the jutting peaks and rising plateaus of the North Carolina mountains. Set in the splendor of these hills are the mountain folk, who strive to retain their lifestyle despite the headaches and traffic caused by tourists taking in the sights along the parkway. The peak time for entering the parkway is May through October, when hotel accommodations are plentiful and visitor facilities are open. Fall is when the landscape is at its best. The natural foliage of the mountain evergreens is magically enhanced by a brisk palette of reds, yellows, oranges, and golds. Although winter rates are appealing, cold-weather conditions may make roads inaccessible. As though the mountains were not inspiring enough, North Carolina also offers other sites filled with natural splendor. You can create your own script for this 470-mile drive called the "Most Scenic Highway in America" by entering at the southern end of Shenandoah National Park near the Virginia border. The slow drive that follows the road's sharp curves and narrow straightaways is full of serendipitous discoveries, from fresh-grown apples sold at stands along the roadside to rustic "junk" stores.

STATE NEWS IN BRIEF LUMBERTON Crosswind downs private plane; 3 hurt A private plane on its way to Rock Hill crashed Saturday near the Lumberton airport when it was hit by a strong crosswind on takeoff, police said. Three passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, police Lt. T.O. Shaw said. Their identities, ages and conditions were not immediately available. Shaw said the three were aboard a Beechcraft C24R, a single-engine plane, that was leaving the Lumberton Municipal Airport en route to Rock Hill at 12:19 p.m. "They got up to about 50 or 60 feet and a strong gust of wind, a crosswind, forced the plane to the ground," he said. The aircraft was extensively damaged, though it did not catch fire, he said.

N.C. REGIONS OUTPERFORM VIRGINIA LOCALITIES: TIME TO REGIONALIZE
Norfolk has 244,000 jobs and 245,000 people. How can that be? The answer, of course, is that more than 110,000 people who work in Norfolk live elsewhere - and pay property taxes elsewhere. Once upon a time people who worked in a city lived in that city, and city boundaries made economic sense. But for decades, cities and the economic regions they belong to have had widely different boundaries. That's nowhere more apparent than in the economic region called Hampton Roads. Norfolk City Manager James Oliver noted recently that if a large plant were built in Newport News, 50 feet from Hampton, Newport News would receive all the property-tax revenue. If a worker with four children moved to Hampton to work at the Newport News plant, Hampton would have the burden of educating the children, without the property-tax revenue to pay for it. Where's the economic sense to that? A tax plum of an industrial plant moves into Hampton Roads, but tax revenues aren't shared, and Hampton, in fact, suffers financially. Seeking to impose some sense on our economic and governmental boundaries, 18 localities, including five Hampton Roads cities, have formed an alliance with the State Chamber of Commerce called the Partnership for Urban Virginia. Mr. Oliver wrote about it in a column on Page 4 of Business Weekly last Monday. The partnership aspires to present to the 1996 General Assembly ways to transform Virginia into powerful economic regions, rather than weaker cities and counties competing with one another.
