The Role of the PTA
(Page 1 of 1) The PTA is a powerful organization affiliated with many schools across the country. Here's how you can join the club. By GreatSchools.net Staff If you picture the PTA as just a small crew of moms who meet now and then to plan bake sales, you may be in for a big surprise. The Parent Teacher Association, or PTA , is a huge and very influential nationwide organization with state and local affiliates throughout the country. The national PTA is headquartered in Chicago and promotes parent involvement in school communities. It is also a powerful lobbying organization in state legislatures and in Washington, D.C., advocating on behalf of students and schools. PTA vs. PTO

Eduspeak: Learning the Lingo
"Incomprehensible jargon is the hallmark of a profession."
Kingman Brewster (1919-1988), diplomat and president of Yale University
As you dig more into understanding your child's school, you will encounter plenty of buzzwords and phrases, often with startling frequency. As with any industry, the lingo of education employs many such words that sound very appealing when you first hear them.
Here are some other articles on the incomprehensible babble often used in the name of education:

    Terminology Every Parent Must Understand:

Do you think it's just wonderful that your kids' school says it is " child-centered ", using " developmentally appropriate " classes with " collaborative activities " and " discovery learning " with an emphasis on " critical thinking "? Do you nod your head in agreement that a " drill and kill " on " mere facts " to be " regurgitated " is a bad thing and that " less is more

This table demonstrates that many school web sites still do not inform parents enough about the school. Elementary schools do a better job of showcasing student work and informing parents about PTAs or PTOs. However, secondary schools are more likely to post school newsletters and offer links to classroom pages. Informing parents about the school and student activities is an essential component for establishing family-school communication. Therefore, schools have to work harder to incorporate as much information on the school web site as parents may need. http://mygradebook.com

Sunday Brunch: Volunteers make a difference by sharing their lives By JEAN GORDON Daily Courier Features Editor Volunteers have been recognized on the local, state and national level during the past few days, but no certificate, award, free meal or pats on the back are enough to show gratitude to so many. Monday-Friday, large lunch boxes and coolers are packed over at the senior center as individuals, and groups come by to deliver Meals on Wheels. At the congregate meals sites, volunteers are there to help feed the hundreds of senior citizens who will have at least one hot meal that day. What would the Rutherford County Schools and the private schools here do without its volunteers? Imagine schools without tutors, PTAs or PTOs? The volunteers who become buddies to the students are priceless. Not to forget the fun times too, when they show up with cookies or cupcakes on holidays and with their vehicles to drive students to field trips. I got my first introduction to volunteers at the church house where Sunday School teachers, Bible School teachers and missions education leaders spent many, many hours with children and young people. Who in his or her right mind would take on a youth group of sassy teenagers to mentor for years, without receiving any wages for it?

Chapter 9 - Resources Finding the resources to finance, maintain, and upgrade equipment, and to provide teacher training and technical support is universally one of the biggest hurdles that schools face when it comes to technology implementation. For many, the funds are simply unavailable via the conventional means of local tax-based school financing. Despite this fact, we found schools and districts in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the nation that have somehow managed to establish exemplary technology programs. How did they do it? As an additional component of this chapter, we provide some information on the use of various information resources available through the Federal government. Not only is money essential for acquiring technology but so is good information about the availability of Federal programs and information sources. Questionnaire Data: Awareness, Use and Helpfulness of Resources
General Approaches to Resource Acquisition
In this area, we identified a list of nine very general approaches to expanding the resource base available to schools involved in implementing technology. It included various sources of resources (e.g., private versus public), various types of resources (e.g., money versus in-kind), and different types of relationships with the resource providers.
In the questionnaire, we asked schools to indicate whether they were using a particular technical support approach and to rate how much the approach helped on a four-point scale. These questionnaire data are summarized in Table 9.1.

October 4, 2001 October is "Family Awareness Month" October is an important month for our school system as each school places a special focus on parent and family involvement activities. While parent and family involvement is essential to all students' success throughout the year, this special month allows us to provide a number of activities to appeal to a broad range of interest. All fourteen schools have developed a unique "Calendar of Events" outlining the various activities, parent workshops, and special projects that will engage students, faculty, parents, and the larger community. Anyone interested in knowing the specifics for your school, please contact the school or visit our systemwide calendar posted on the Granville County Schools website. As an example, many of our students, teachers, principals, and parents will participate in the annual "STOMP Out Drugs March" being held on October 25 th starting at 4:00 pm at the National Guard Armory in Oxford. This annual event serves as a reminder for our community to keep a strong focus on the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse by students and adults in our community. Everyone is invited to join in the march! "Red Ribbon Week" will once again be one of the ongoing activities sponsored by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) chapters across the school system. Parent Conference Night will be held on October 18

PRINCIPLES The board encourages the development and participation of parent organizations that support the goals of the board and the schools. The board also supports parent organizations as an effective means of actively involving parents in the schools. The superintendent and school officials are expected to educate such organizations on the goals of the board and individual schools, especially as they relate to improving student success. The superintendent and school officials are also expected to help such organizations in identifying opportunities to assist the schools in meeting these goals. CONDITIONS FOR ESTABLISHING PARENT ORGANIZATIONS Parent organizations, including PTAs, PTOs and booster clubs, are not considered a part of the school district. However, because the organizations and their activities reflect upon the school district, all parent organizations must accept the following conditions in order to operate on behalf of the schools. Parent organizations must obtain prior approval from the principal for (1) any fund-raising event, (2) any purchase for the school, (3) any function involving the participation of students, (4) any event which is likely to reflect upon the school or district, or (5) any projects, plans or movement to expand, modernize, and/or renovate school controlled properties.
