State Laws Mandating Diabetes Health Coverage
Updated: September 24, 2004 A leading cause of blindness, kidney disease, heart disease and amputations, diabetes claims the lives of more than 193,000 Americans each year. According to the CDC, it is the country's sixth leading cause of death by disease. Approximately 18.2 million Americans have diabetes, but one-third of those are undiagnosed. As of May 2004, forty-six states have some type of laws requiring health insurance coverage to include treatment for diabetes. The states not included are Alabama, Idaho, North Dakota and Ohio.
In 2002, Georgia and Wisconsin each passed an expansion of current coverage requirements. In 2003 Hawaii adopted a resolution to clarify its mandate of diabetes education coverage. No new laws were passed during the first four months of 2004. About 17 million Americans have diabetes today, including about 16 million with Type 2. In addition, at least 16 million more Americans have pre-diabetes a condition that raises a person's risk of getting type 2 diabetes. However, a diagnosis of pre-diabetes does not mean that diabetes is inevitable, and the new campaign aims at encouraging people to take modest steps that will reduce their risks. Nationally, diabetes has increased nearly 50 percent in the past 10 years alone, according to CDC estimates.

About Our Food, Nutrition and Health Programs
The Family and Consumer Science Agent, Jessica Roberson, provides various food, nutrition, and health programs for all ages from the preschooler to the senior adult. Programs have been conducted in schools (all ages), child care centers, and senior centers. Topics have included the following: the importance of daily physical exercise, choosing healthy foods, reading food labels, portion sizes, food allergies, food safety, dairy foods, fats and sugars, vitamins and minerals, the food guide pyramid, and many more. Jessica has worked with the county school system on several projects. One project was the fruit and vegetable grant that Peachtree Elementary was given. She, along with the 4-H Agent and 4-H Program Associate, presented several programs for the entire school population focused on the importance of consuming five fruits and vegetables each day. She also works with the school health personnel to present a short program focusing on daily physical activity and choosing healthy goods during the annual school health fairs which reaches every student in the county school system. For more information on the food, nutrition and health programs that Extension provides, please contact the Cherokee County Cooperative Extension Center at 828.837.2210 or send an e-mail to jessica_roberson@ncsu.edu.
