Addressing Lifestyle Changes
Nutrition and Physical Activity (Obesity)
Colorado: Launching Colorado on the Move TM : A Comprehensive Effort to Increase Physical Activity
Public Health Problem
Between 1987 and 2000, obesity reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with more than 45 million adults classified as obese. In Colorado, adult obesity (body mass index [BMI] 30) rates increased from 6.9% in 1990 to 14.9% in 2001; the prevalence of overweight (BMI 25) among adults also rose from 36.7% to 51.6% during those years. Evidence That Prevention Works
Research has demonstrated that preventive measures such as improved nutrition, tobacco cessation, increased physical activity, and early detection and intervention may prevent heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases. Physical activity helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among the elderly; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications. Program Example
Through a partnership with the University of Colorado Health Sciences, the Colorado Physical Activity and Nutrition Program is implementing two community interventions in Peetz, Colorado, which has a large rural population, and in the Denver Metro Black Churches, which allows program coordinators to work in an already established urban and African American setting to reach high-risk populations. These interventions focus on a physical activity component to encourage participants to walk 2,000 steps a day more than they walked before the program. Pedometers are offered to assist participants in their efforts. Additional worksites and community sites throughout the state are also participating. The intervention will introduce a nutrition component as well, most likely promoting a 5 A Day campaign. The program has been named

EDUCATING CONSUMERS ABOUT HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES:
    POINT-OF-SALE INTERVENTIONS
Also available as PDF This paper is part of a series of nutrition policy profiles prepared by Prevention Institute for the Center for Health Improvement (CHI). Background Point-of-sale interventions make nutrition information available at the places where people buy their food. Through strategies such as labeling items on store shelves and restaurant menus or offering free samples of healthy foods, grocery stores, cafeterias, and institutions that house vending machines can help consumers choose healthy foods. Although people receive nutrition information from a variety of sources, studies suggest nutrition education offered at the "point of sale" is more likely to influence their food purchasing behavior. The U.S. Dietary guidelines recommend eating less fat, saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol. By changing their diets, people can reduce their risk of cancer, heart disease, and other chronic diseases. Yet many people do not know which foods are high in fat, salt, and cholesterol. Because families cook at home less frequently than in the past, they eat more ready-made convenience foods, and are often unaware of how these foods have been prepared. Businesses can guide consumers to healthy cooking ingredients and pre-prepared foods by strategically placing nutrition information. Businesses benefit by winning the loyalty of their customers, while consumers gain by learning healthier purchasing habits.

A diet rich in grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, fiber and low-fat calcium sources and low in total fat and saturated fat is basic to the prevention of CVD and a majority of the other chronic diseases. With North Carolina's rich agricultural sector, widely respected institutions of higher learning and research, excellent health care system, and an innovative public health system, CVH nutrition leaders have a strong foundation upon which to build. This Plan supports the coordination of resources and efforts, effective promotion of improved nutrition through social marketing efforts, and resource development and advocacy around pressing nutritional concerns in NC. Eat Smart, Move More . . . North Carolina is a statewide initiative that promotes increased opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity through policy and environmental change interventions and enhanced public awareness of the need for such changes.
