The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA promotes within the legislative and executive branches of government a better understanding of the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity control to the nation's health and health-care costs. One of the primary goals of NANA is to cultivate champions for nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention in Congress and federal agencies. Efforts include supporting effective education programs, advocating adequate funding for programs, and promoting environmental changes that help Americans eat better and be more active. NANA is made up of more than 300 organizations. NANA's policy priorities include:

The Epidemic
  • 61% of North Carolina adults are overweight or obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2004) 22% of non-Hispanic white adults, 36% of non-Hispanic black adults, and 21% of Hispanic adults in North Carolina are obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2004) 27% of North Carolina high-school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. (CDC YRBSS, 2003)

North Carolina in Action
The mission of North Carolina’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases is to reverse the rising tide of obesity and chronic disease among North Carolinians by helping them to eat smart, move more, and achieve a healthy weight. This is being accomplished through multi-level policy and environmental change in several settings, including preschools and schools, worksites, health care, communities, and faith-based organizations. Several interventions are underway:
  • The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP-SACC) aims to improve nutrition and physical activity environments and practices in child care centers. With the guidance of local Child Care Health Consultants (CCHC), center staff conduct self-assessments and establish action plans based on their findings. From evaluation data gathered so far, NAP-SACC promises to be an effective method to create policy and environmental change in child care centers. Plans to roll out the intervention statewide continue.

Bangkok, Thailand
November 14 - December 2, 2005
Rationale
Policymakers, program staff and researchers face many questions related to the monitoring and evaluation of population, health and nutrition programs in developing countries. There is, however, a shortage of staff with the skills to answer these questions. Such monitoring and evaluation skills are crucial to the successful implementation, design, monitoring and evaluation of population nutrition and health programs. In order to build the capacity of professionals in the Asia, Near East and Eastern European regions, a three-week non-degree course will provide training in state-of-the-art monitoring and evaluation tools and techniques. Workshop Objectives
The objectives of the workshop are:
  • To understand the basic concepts and practical approaches for performance monitoring and evaluation.
  • To learn state-of-the-art, tools and techniques used specifically to monitor and evaluate population, health and nutrition programs.
  • To gain hands-on experience in designing monitoring and evaluation plans.

Return to School Health Programs

School Health Issues Recent research studies as well as publications targeted to front-line child health professionals, parents and educators have focused public attention on the epidemic in childhood obesity in the United States. While studies debate how to apportion blame among potential causal agents, a consensus has emerged that trends in childhood obesity bode poorly for the health status of children now and as they age to maturity. The following sections provide links to basic information on the problem, prevention strategies and key government documents. Future additions to this section will present summaries of model programs and evaluated interventions. Childhood Obesity: A Select Bibliography March 2005 Resources Physical Exercise
