ATTEN, HUT – The Military Boys have arrived – The defensive names that have graced the Tar Heel landscape, in particular the defensive line, over the last thirty years reads like a who’s who of ACC defenders. Lawrence Taylor, Greg Ellis, Marcus Jones, Ebenezer Ekuban, Ryan Sims and Julius Peppers all terrorized skill position players throughout each one’s respective careers in Kenan Stadium and all were bona fide NFL first round talents. Boy, did that all change in 2003. To say that the defensive front four for the Heels was chewed up on a regular basis would be a severe understatement.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. By Rod Andrew Jr. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2001. viii, 169 pp. $29.95. ISBN 0-8078-2610-3. Military virtue equates to civic virtue, and, by definition, good soldiers make good citizens. According to Rod Andrew Jr., "this idea preceded the existence of the Confederacy, drew sustenance from the Lost Cause, and persists today" (p. 62). In his examination of the southern military school tradition, Andrew seeks to reinterpret previous arguments by John Hope Franklin, Marcus Cunliffe, Don Higginbotham, and others. Viewing military traditions within their cultural and political contexts, he notes that the southern version of militarism encompasses honor, patriotism, civic duty, sacrifice, and piety. Moreover, military discipline inculcates positive character traits-bearing, courage, loyalty, and moral behavior. According to Andrew, professional officer training did not constitute the primary purpose of southern military schools. Rather, the South's military tradition found expression through southern culture, educational beliefs, and political ideology.

HISTORY
North Carolina was originally inhabited by various tribes of Indians, the three principal ones being the Tuscaroras in the east, the Catawbas in the centre, and the Cherokees in the west. A small body of Cherokees is still located in the mountain section. In 1584 Queen Elizabeth granted to Sir Walter Raleigh the right to discover and hold any lands not inhabited by Christian people. This charter constitutes the first step in the work of English colonization in America. Five voyages were made under it, but without success in establishing a permanent settlement. In 1663 Charles II granted to Sir George Carteret and seven others a stretch of land on the Atlantic coast, lying between Virginia and Florida, and running west to the South Seas. The grantees were created "absolute lords proprietors" of the province of Carolina, with full powers to make and execute such laws as they deemed proper. This grant was enlarged in 1665 both as to territory and jurisdiction, and in 1669 the lords proprietors

England was an early source of munitions and supplier of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The merchants of London made a gift of a rosewood and mahogany carriage to support the Armstrong cannon barrel. That carriage was replaced years later at West Point. A brand new carriage of treated pine has been constructed by John Braxton of Snow Camp to hold the Armstrong barrel when it returns to North Carolina. A reinforced concrete pad has been installed at Fort Fisher to hold the Armstrong, along with a protective decorative fence and an alarm system. Interpretive signage that tells the story of the Armstrong will soon be in place. Before plans for the exhibit could be implemented, they had to be approved by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, Fort Fisher, the Fort Fisher Restoration Committee, New York State Historic Preservation Office, and several U.S. Army sections. Complex negotiations got underway in 2002; final details were agreed to in November of this year.

Support the Archives The Founding Fathers: North Carolina William Blount, North Carolina William Blount was the great-grandson of Thomas Blount, who came from England to Virginia soon after 1660 and settled on a North Carolina plantation. William, the eldest in a large family, was born in 1749 while his mother was visiting his grandfather's Rosefield estate, on the site of present Windsor near Pamlico Sound. The youth apparently received a good education. Shortly after the War for Independence began, in 1776, Blount enlisted as a paymaster in the North Carolina forces. Two years later, he wed Mary Grainier (Granger); of their six children who reached adulthood, one son also became prominent in Tennessee politics. Blount spent most of the remainder of his life in public office. He sat in the lower house of the North Carolina legislature (1780-84), including service as speaker, as well as in the upper (1788-90). In addition, he took part in national politics, serving in the Continental Congress in 1782-83 and 1786-87.
