This page is written as a finding aid for beginning genealogists interested in families from North Carolina. As such, there are general sources applicable to all beginning genealogists, and some applicable only to North Carolina genealogy. Introduction to the Field
In its broadest sense, genealogy is the study of one's family and how one is related to other family members, be they immediate family members or distant ancestors. In order to find more about a person's ancestors, most genealogists interview relatives, study public records, and read published genealogies (written accounts of people and their descendants or ancestors). While the amount of work involved can seem daunting to the beginning genealogist, it can easily turn into a fascinating adventure in rediscovering lost family connections to the past.
When using an online catalog or a search engine to find resources concerning genealogy in North Carolina, the following subject headings or keywords are very useful for finding what you want. Simply do a subject or keyword search with the appropriate subject heading or keyword. Please remember that your search strategy will vary depending on the online catalog or search engine you use. Be sure to read all the available instructions. You may be able to do more advanced searches by using the Boolean operators "and," "or," and "not."

At the core of the collection is the library of William R. Valentiner, the first director of the Museum. Gifts from a later director, Justus Bier, also enriched the early growth of the Library. The Library's emphasis is on Western European and American art, in support of the Museum's primary collections. The Library holds approximately 30,000 volumes, including books, auction and exhibition catalogs, CD-ROMs, videos and nearly 100 current periodical subscriptions. A publications exchange program with more than 300 museums worldwide augments the collection. Books added since 1980 are included in the online public access catalog, which is part of the North Carolina State Library's OPAC. The Art Reference Library catalogs materials using the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) databases. Periodical holdings and on-order records are not included. Other resources not in the OPAC include the Artists File (a vertical file which includes North Carolina artists), material from the John Levy Galleries in New York (also available on microfilm from the

    U. of North Carolina Gets $4-Million to Expand 'Public Library of the Internet'
By FLORENCE OLSEN The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's MetaLab, one of the busiest digital libraries on the Internet, on Monday received a $4-million gift and a new name, ibiblio.org. Its benefactor says the gift will help the site develop its unique character as "the public library of the Internet." The Red Hat Center, a private foundation in Durham, N.C., made the gift and announced a five-year joint project with the university to expand ibiblio. Robert Young, who is one of the founders of the Linux software company Red Hat, says ibiblio demonstrates the value of free public libraries and exemplifies the ideals of the open-source movement. The movement maintains that knowledge, unlike real property, should be free. Linux is an open-source computer operating system created by volunteers from all over the world. Consisting of computer code that is publicly available, it has attracted a considerable amount of interest as an alternative to Microsoft's Windows products. The university's enormous library server, which handles an average of 1.5 million transactions daily, is one of the largest repositories of Linux software and software documentation. "Developers and programmers around the world take this stuff for granted but value it highly," Mr. Young says.
