North Carolina Geography and Climate
North Carolina is home to over 7 million people, making it the 11th most populous state in the country. From Manteo in the east to Murphy in the west, North Carolina is 560 miles wide, making it the widest state east of the Mississippi. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Tennessee on the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Mountains in the west, the Piedmont, or rolling hills, in the center, and the Coast in the east. North Carolina, in the warm temperate zone, has a mild, generally uniform climate, with abundant and well distributed rainfall. Winters are rarely extremely cold, and although summers can be somewhat hot, an escape can always be found in the cooler air of our mountains or the ocean breezes of our beaches.

Review: North Carolina: People and Environments, 2nd Edition
Elizabeth Hines, Professor of Geography, University of North Carolina at Wilmington; reviewed in the Southeastern Geographer, Vol. XXXXIII, No. 1, May 2003, pp. 151-153 'Geographers would love to have a volume like this for every state. The authors have created a reference work for North Carolina that is monumental in scope and detail. An abbreviated first edition of this work appeared in 1986. After North Carolina's population mushroomed from 6.6 million (in 1990) to nearly 8.2 million in 2001, an increase of 21%, the authors expanded and updated their earlier work, producing a much improved version. The Preface acknowledges that the second edition has doubled in size and grown exponentially in detail. They have visualized "state environments on all geographic levels" by including over 800 illustrative maps and photographs, many in full color. The volume is intended not only for use as a textbook

The outward movement of people and economic activities away from the city in recent years has continued the need for formal regional planning. Planners guide growth in the urban-rural fringe and plan for revitalization of central cities. Increased awareness of the impact of population growth on the environment has also increased and the demand for trained personnel to work toward solutions to environmental problems. Geographic Information Science (GIS) provides tools necessary to efficiently undertake urban planning projects and study contemporary environmental issues. These systems have opened a whole new realm of career opportunities.
CAREERS IN GEOGRAPHY
The Department works closely with planning agencies, environmental groups, federal mapping agencies, the Census Bureau, chambers of commerce, and numerous businesses. Many of our graduates are employed in urban planning in areas such as zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, comprehensive land use plans, sign ordinances, and thoroughfare plans. Others find rewarding careers in business and government. Other career opportunities include environmental protection, meteorology, market analysis, and regional specialties. Graduates also enter careers directly or indirectly related to cartography, remote sensing, and GIS.
The Department of Geography at UNCG facilitates paid internships and research opportunities for students. Many of these interns find employment in the same agencies after graduation. By the department offering a flexible course schedule, students may find it possible to hold jobs while pursuing their degree in geography.
