Planners guide growth in the urban-rural fringe and plan for revitalization of central cities. Increased awareness of the impact of population growth on the environment has also increased and the demand for trained personnel to work toward solutions to environmental problems. Geographic Information Science (GIS) provides tools necessary to efficiently undertake urban planning projects and study contemporary environmental issues. These systems have opened a whole new realm of career opportunities. CAREERS IN GEOGRAPHY The Department works closely with planning agencies, environmental groups, federal mapping agencies, the Census Bureau, chambers of commerce, and numerous businesses. Many of our graduates are employed in urban planning in areas such as zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, comprehensive land use plans, sign ordinances, and thoroughfare plans. Others find rewarding careers in business and government. Other career opportunities include environmental protection, meteorology, market analysis, and regional specialties. Graduates also enter careers directly or indirectly related to cartography, remote sensing, and GIS.
