A Macon County Landmark
Gillespie Chapel
The evocative steeple of historic Gillespie Chapel watches over the valley of Jones Creek as it has for more than a century. In its day, the building served as church and schoolhouse for this rural Macon County community. The chapel is no longer on the Methodist Circuit. But, as the home of the Upper Cartoogechaye Community Club, it continues to hold a central place in the life of the neighborhood. Teresita Press took its name from the Teresita Post Office, which once served the community from the Gillespie Chapel parsonage. The rural landscape of Macon County is rich in history, legend and folklore. Exploring the heritage of this Southern Appalachian region is the mission of Teresita Press.

I am not actively researching this name in other states. (See my other Davis line though). Click on the Families link to see pages for the various known families. My Davis line begins with William Davis , born ca 1730/40 in Virginia. He served in the French and Indian War, and also in the Revolution. After the war he settled in what is now Avery County, North Carolina, but was then Burke County. He married Franky Carpenter ca 1786. They both died in Yancey County, NC on Three Mile Creek. He in 1841, she in 1842. Their son Jacob Davis , born 1801, married his cousin Susanna Miller in 1825, and they lived at Three Mile Creek awhile, then moved to Blount County, Tennessee for a couple of years, then to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC where both died, he in 1873, she in 1895. Their daughter Margaret Ann Davis, born 1835, married her cousin William Carpenter in 1855.

I am not actively researching this name in other states. Click on the Families link to see pages for the various known families including my own. My Carpenter line begins with Mathias Carpenter (a. k. a. Mathias Zimmerman) born ca 1750 in Pennsylvania. He came to what is now Yadkin Co, NC in the late 1760's, and married Elizabeth Miller there. They lied on Deep Creek which then was Rowan County, but became Surry County in 1771. In 1850 this became Yadkin County, but the family was long gone by then. Mathias moved from Surry to Ashe County, NC in the 1790's, and he and his wife both died there in 1835. Mathias and Elizabeth had several children, and I can claim three of them as ancestors: 1) Frances "Franky" Carpenter, born 1771, who married William Davis, and moved to Burke Co, NC (now Avery County). 2)

The main locations of the Gaston County Public Library and the Lincoln County Public Library both house a North Carolina Collection. These are non-circulating reference collections of historical and cultural materials that focus primarily on Gaston and Lincoln Counties but include North Carolina as a whole. Lesser emphasis is given to bordering states such as South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Resources The North Carolina Collections offers the following resources:
  • Books and PeriodicalsBoth libraries collect material focusing on the history and genealogy of their area and also contain general genealogical resources. Gaston County history can be found at 975.677, and Lincoln County history at 975.678. The collection at Gastonia includes city directories for Gastonia back to 1910 and county cross references for Gaston County back to 1973. In addition, the Gaston County location houses an eight volume James Worthy Scrapbook created by Scott Lewis.
  • The online is an index to biographical material that is "buried" within books in our collections. More entries are being added to these pages as staff members have time.
  • Heritage Quest Online is a database with images of all the census population schedules for the whole country from 1790 through 1930. This is the equivalent of buying all the census microfilms. HQ also provides indexing for some census years, full-text copies of over 25,000 books on genealogy and local history, actual images of Revolutionary War pension files from the National Archives, and PERSI, an index to genealogical magazines. HQ is available at all the libraries and anyone with a current library card can use it from their
