After researching the COLE family for many years, and checking out every possible lead or tip, I have come to a dead end on Leven's past beyond North Carolina. I would like to start off with a very special "Thank You" to my "Biggest Buddy" in genealogy, Earl (Wes) MUNDY . We work so well together and we both have made a lot of progress on this family sharing and brainstorming. A "Big Thank You" to the late Ron COLE, Sr . and also his son Ron COLE, Jr . for a lot of documents and research they shared with Wes and me. A special thanks to Marian PORTER , Jerri SUDDERTH , and Sherry CLARK for sharing. And thanks to all you EOFF and GIBSON researchers that have shared as well. It is not my intent to dispute anyone's research or theories, but to present my own on this family. I welcome any comments, corrections and any additional information on this family. North Carolina and Virginia
by Paul Heinegg
Paul Heinegg's Free African Americans of North Carolina and Virginia is a collection of genealogies about African American families living in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Garnering the American Society of Genealogists' Donald Lines Jacobus Award in 1994, it is a resource well-worth investigating for any individual tracing families from these locations and time periods. Here, you can get a taste of Paul Heinegg's research and writing through the Introduction he wrote for this book. Even if you are not researching families from these locations and time periods, you will find that the Introduction provides you with an interesting look at African-American life during this time period. Specifically, he shows how the social status of many landowning African-American families changed so much over the years that "by the 20th century they had no idea their ancestors had been free." It is lengthy, so you may prefer to print it rather than reading it online. Footnotes for the Introduction are included at the bottom of this page. However, to get information about citations shown in square brackets ( [ ] ), please refer to the complete book.

I'm researching the Bailey family of western North Carolina, primarily in Rutherford and Cleveland counties. The oldest ancestor I know about is Benjamin Bailey (born in 1821), who married Lucy Braddy. His ancestors came from England.
Their son, Joe Bailey (1844-1938) married Sara Womack. Their son, Benjamin Willis Bailey, is my grandfather. Joe was also married to Nancy LeQuire.
I am also seeking information on the Fraser family of Hall County, Georgia, and Cleveland County, North Carolina.
Any information or suggestions will be appreciated. I will gladly share what I have with anyone.

// Included to access cookie for webpub email feature I am a direct descendant of Joseph Howell of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Howell who moved to North Carolina from Virginia about 1720. John Howell was the son of John Howell I, who was born in Wales prior to 1600 and emigrated to the United States and settled in Henrico County, Virginia, lived to an old age and is buried there.
We are of the lineage of John Howell I. He was a descendant of Hywel Dha, The Good, ancient King of Wales.
The Howell name, in all variations, Hywel, Howel, Hywell, etc., can be found prominently throughout the history of Wales from the most ancient times to the present day.
Throughout recorded history, from kings of nations to simple farm folk, the Howells have held one firm ideal and tradition, "We Are The Blood. We are Family." So shall it ever be.
I am also researching the Haywood County, NC lineages of Allison, Gibson/Gipson, Frady, Smith, Radford, Lee, McNabb, Leatherwood, and Prater. I am also very interested in the Confederate records of these families, and any old photos which anyone would care to share. Please feel free to take any of the photos from this page if you connect to them. All I ask is that you give credit to the owners of the photos if you use them on your site.
I have removed the "Descendants of Solomon Gibson" file which I had posted here because I have discovered serious inaccuracies in it.
