About the North Carolina GenWeb Project
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The North Carolina GenWeb Project is an extension of the Kentucky GenWeb Project. The person responsible for this Yancey County is Clinton N. Edwards

    HOKE COUNTY
Hello, I'm glad you came! My name is Myrtle Bridges and I am the coordinator for the Hoke County, North Carolina USGenWeb Project. Hoke was formed in 1911 from Cumberland and Robeson Counties. It was named in honor of Robert F. Hoke, a major-general in the Confederate States Army. It lies in the southeastern part of North Carolina, bounded by Cumberland, Harnett, Moore, Robeson, and Scotland counties. Raeford is the county seat. Hoke has many historical cemeteries, most situated on our Fort Bragg military reservation. With it's two hundred and thirty two identifiable graves Longstreet Presbyterian Church Cemetery provides much genealogical information. As a researcher at the NC Department of Archives and History, I know the difficulty in obtaining needed information in a limited amount of time, especially if one is a non-resident of North Carolina. The USGenweb project is an excellent resource which only works when people share their knowledge. I am always happy to post information pertaining to this county and encourage you to contact Myrtle here. Please share your records with others and experience the joy that comes in helping someone find his Hoke County roots.

Robeson County, in the southeastern section of North Carolina, was established on Jan. 6, 1787, carved from Bladen, but settlers lived here before that. The earliest verifiable records show settlers as early as 1747, when Henry O’Berry applied for two tracts west of Raft Swamp, when the area was part of Bladen County. The county bears the name of Col. Thomas Robeson, a hero from the Battle of Elizabethtown, fought in September 1781 during the Revolutionary War. According to Judge Henry McKinnon, a charter member of the Robeson County Historical Society: "Col. Robeson is said to have demanded that the new county be named for him as a condition for supporting its creation. But Robeson died in 1785, so he could not have had a final say. Robeson never lived in the area that bears his name." Robeson County is bounded by the state of South Carolina and Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, Bladen and Columbus counties. You are our visitor
