North Carolina’s Voice on Mental Illness Family-to-Family Coordinator Leaves NAMI NC Matisha Brown, our Family-to-Family Coordinator for the past 1½ years, has left NAMI North Carolina. Matisha brought so much to the NAMI North Carolina family and has been instrumental in the growth and success of our Family-to-Family programs. While we are saddened at losing Matisha, we are happy for her. Matisha will be joining Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes (CASA) in Wake County. CASA is one of the most innovative and successful programs in the state providing supported housing for individuals with mental illness. Joining CASA is a wonderful opportunity for Matisha and also allows her to continue her work on behalf of people with mental illness and their families. Matisha has offered to remain involved with NAMI North Carolina as a Family-to-Family educator, and we will take her up on that offer. We are grateful to have benefitted from her talents while she was at NAMI North Carolina and we wish Matisha the greatest success in her new endeavor.

Or...
Maybe you have had your heart set on a specific institution all of your life, your bags are packed and you are ready to hit the road.
If only it were that easy!
Let's face it, cost is a big determining factor in choosing the right institution. The Facts The amount a family will be expected to contribute for college costs and the resulting eligibility for federal financial aid is determined by national standards that consider such factors as annual income, assets, debts, number of family members in college and other considerations.
It is important to keep in mind that the amount of federal financial aid eligibility and financial need changes according to the estimated expenses at each college, not by the amount a family is expected to pay. Therefore, more financial aid may be available for higher-cost colleges and universities.

Hidden Hunger: The Face of Hunger Among Families and Children in North Carolina
Executive Summary
The purpose of the North Carolina Childhood Hunger Project (NCCHP) is to provide in depth information on households that are experiencing hunger. The study examines the factors that facilitate getting out of hunger, as well as those factors that may act as barriers. In doing so, it takes us one step closer to gaining an understanding about the complexity of the issue of hunger in families in North Carolina and its interrelationship with other issues facing families in poverty, including employment, housing, transportation, drug abuse, domestic, violence, and health crises. Within that context, the research was guided by the goals of identifying the determinants of hunger and the enabling factors for getting out of hunger. This document presents the results of the analysis of the data collected and the findings of the study exploring issues related to hunger among the poor in North Carolina.

Community Leadership Program Title: Community Voices: Leadership Development for Community Decision Making Program Description and Significant Outcomes: Community Voices develops groups of limited resource and other non-traditional leaders who can work together over time, identify important community issues and solve problems related to issues in their communities. Over 1000 new leaders were trained during the pilot in four states. Since then, North Carolina extension educators and leaders from the target communities have trained more than 700 new leaders. Communities have addressed or solved over 70 issues and 35 community organizations have evolved. In one county alone more than 100 limited resource parents graduated from the program in hopes of using what they learned to address the needs of their children. Describe the Audience: The program was designed to teach or enhance the leadership skills of limited resource and other non-traditional leaders who traditionally have not been actively involved in public decision making in their communities. These persons have often experienced many social, economic and educational limitations. The program however, has also been successful with other audiences.

The benefits of having a successful Family Program are vast. First, family members of Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen will enjoy a sense of security knowing that a family support network exists to help them in times of need. The unit will increase their readiness levels to achieve their assigned missions because unit members will know that their families are being cared for during their absence. Even during times of normal duty, the relationships between the Guard and its families will be strengthened, and a sense of teamwork and cohesiveness will develop. The result is that the military community will be a stronger, better organization that retains good quality Guardsmen and their families.
