As the New Year approaches, we ask ourselves, "How will this year be special? What can I do to enhance the lives of others and to renew myself?" One of the greatest mitzvot that a Jewish individual can perform is that of visiting the sick. Bikkur Cholim literally means "visiting the sick," but is so much more. A visit can lift the spirits and provide a strong sense of Jewish "family" caring. Join Jewish Family Services and the Women's Philanthropy Division of Jewish Federation to discover how you can make a difference. Sunday, October 9 at the Jewish Federation office

Gift Card Program
As the stories of Hurricane Katrina continue to unfold, our community is looking for ways to respond to people in need. We know that many have lost everything as a result of the storm and that its impact is being felt by so many now and that will continue for some time to come. In response, the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation is establishing a Gift Card Program to be administered through Jewish Family Services.

Assessment of Need
It is easy to see that family-run businesses represent a large, diverse, important and, indeed, an essential aspect of commerce. Consider the evidence: the family firm segment of the economy is 90+% of all US businesses (in 1991), it contributes 40% of the total US GDP (1993 dollars), employs 59% of the US workforce, and is responsible for generating 78% of all new net jobs (between 1976-1990). (source: Melissa Carey Shanker and Joseph H. Astrachan, Family Business Review , Vol IX, No. 2, Summer 1996).
Family firms face many of the challenges found in large, public firms. In addition, they face a variety of unique issues inherent to family firms. The typical issues faced by family firms are varied and complex. It is in this context that the mission of the NC Family Business Forum was created.
Mission of the Forum
To provide a
curriculum and resource
dedicated to the growth and success of
family businesses.
