University Regulation Of Student Conduct As students willingly accept the benefits of membership in the UNC Charlotte academic community, they acquire obligations to observe and uphold the principles and standards that define the terms of the UNC Charlotte community. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has enacted two codes governing student conduct. The University has also enacted a program for the prevention of the use of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse. All UNC Charlotte students are obligated to be familiar with these codes and to conduct themselves in accordance with the standards set forth. THE UNC CHARLOTTE CODE OF STUDENT ACADEMIC INTEGRITY governs the responsibility of students to maintain integrity in academic work, defines violations of the standards, describes procedures for handling alleged violations of the standards, and lists applicable penalties. The following conduct is prohibited in that Code as violating those standards:
  • Cheating. Intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, notes, study aids or other devices in any academic exercise. This definition includes unauthorized communication of information during an academic exercise. Fabrication and Falsification.

The Honor Code Persons enrolled in The Graduate School are members of the student body of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and are held responsible for conducting themselves in conformity with the moral and legal restraints found in any law-abiding community. They are, moreover, subject to the regulations of the Honor Code. The Honor Code is the heart of integrity at Carolina. In brief, the Honor Code states that all students shall “refrain from lying, cheating, or stealing,” but the Honor Code imparts much more. It is the guiding force behind the responsible exercise of freedom, the foundation of student self-governance at UNC. By abiding by the Honor Code, students can be assured that their individual rights and academic work will be respected. Mutual Responsibilities of the Faculty and Students Academic work is a joint enterprise involving faculty and students. Both have a fundamental investment in the enterprise and both must share responsibility for ensuring its integrity. In relation to the Honor Code, therefore, specific responsibilities of the faculty which parallel the responsibilities of the students have been formally adopted by the Faculty Council.

Home Libraries Newsletters Workshops IDEA Amendments of 1997 Require Changes in NC Individualized Education Programs The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 make significant changes in the components of a student's Individualized Education Program or IEP. All IEPs written after July 1, 1998 must meet the new requirements. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), Exceptional Children's Division, has developed a new IEP form to help local school systems make sure that IEPs are in compliance with the federal law. NCDPI does not require that school systems use the state form, however, they do strongly recommend that all components of the state form be included in any locally developed IEP. Most local school systems adopt the state IEP form with minor changes. The new IEP form reflects the changes made to IEPs by IDEA 1997. Part 1 of the new form includes a place to document the student's overall strengths and the area of eligibility (such as autism, hearing impaired, etc.) Part 1 also lists the "special factors" that, according to the new law, must be considered by the team when writing an IEP. Those questions include: Does the parent have concerns for enhancing the education of their child?

Academic dishonesty takes many forms, from blatant acts of cheating, stealing, or similar misdeeds to the more subtle forms of plagiarism, all of which are totally out of place in an institution of higher learning.  Reporting and adjudication procedures have been developed to enforce the policy of academic integrity, to ensure justice, and to protect individual rights.   Complete details may be found in the current Code of Student Life and in the

In 1952 Dr. Allan S. Hurlburt conducted a study concerning the need for community colleges in North Carolina but it was not until 1957, during the administration of Governor Luther H. Hodges, that the Community College Act was passed. The legislation authorized the establishment of community colleges and placed the general administration of the colleges under what was known then as the State Board of Higher Education (now the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina). By 1961 five community junior colleges had been established under the jurisdiction of local boards of trustees and the State Board of Higher Education. These first five community colleges were College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, Wilmington College in Wilmington, Mecklenburg College and Charlotte College in Charlotte, and Asheville-Biltmore College in Asheville. In 1963 Gaston College in Dallas became the sixth community college approved under the 1957 act.
