Parent Involvement in Education
Kathleen Cotton and Karen Reed Wikelund INTRODUCTION It is no wonder that parent involvement with the schools has become a major educational issue in the 1980s. This is an era of increasing concern about the quality of education in this country. States are taking a greater role in monitoring and maintaining academic standards. Communities are ever more watchful of the expense of public education. Local schools are concerned about continuing to provide high-quality teaching and other services with dwindling resources. And parents want assurance that their children will receive adequate preparation to lead rewarding adult lives. Is parent involvement a valuable, if largely untapped, resource for schools struggling to provide state-ofthe -art instruction with diminishing fundsa way to instill pride and interest in schooling, increase student achievement, and enhance a sense of community and commitment? Or is it one more responsibility to add to overburdened teachers and administratorsor even a threat to the autonomy and professionalism of the schools? This review of the literature on parent involvement examines these issues, focusing, in particular on the following five areas:

... Employers Special Education Watson School of Education http://www.uncwil.edu/ed Career Titles Major Skills ... Web Sites Special education teachers work with students-from toddlers to those in their early 20s-who have a variety of disabilities. Most special education teacher are found at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level. Special education teachers design and modify instruction to meet a student's special needs. Teachers also work with students who have other special instructional needs, including those who are gifted and talented. Many occupations today require a college educated individual who can write and speak well, solve problems, learn new information quickly and work well with others on a team. This means that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields, and your future career may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and transferable skills than any specific academic major. However, the following list contains a representative sample of current job titles of former Business Systems majors.Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond the bachelors level.

Posted August 26, 2005
Move More: North Carolina's Recommended Standards for Physical Activity in School were unveiled Friday, August 26, at Carroll Middle School in Raleigh.
The "Move More School Standards" provide recommendations on ways students, families, principals, teachers, school staff, school board members, superintendents and community leaders can make school a place that supports and encourages physical activity and physical education. Students need both physical activity throughout the day and physical education classes to adopt and maintain an active lifestyle.
The "Move More School Standards" were jointly released by the N.C. Division of Public Health, N.C. Department of Public Instruction, N.C. Healthy Schools and N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. These organizations collaborated to develop the "Move More School Standards," a companion to the "Eat Smart School Standards" released in May 2004.
Though the implementation of the "Move More School Standards" is voluntary, local education agencies can use the recommendations to craft physical activity policies that will contribute to students' well being and health.

Credentialed Parenting Educators in NC
  • North Carolina is one of the first states in the nation to offer a Professional Parenting Educator Credential.
