Parents Responsible for Education
By Jim Royston Not a single institution I knew growing up stands unscathed today. Nothing, not the church, not public officials, not the family, not the military and certainly not public schools has been unscarred by change, doubt and cynicism. are In the midst of this change T.C. Pinckney of Virginia will suggest to the resolutions committee at the Southern Baptist Convention meeting next week in Indianapolis that Christian families abandon public schools. I cannot yet agree, however, that the best way to educate Christian children is to remove the influence of Christian children and their families from the public education arena. I affirm the educational options available in our country. I affirm children are different and some will excel in situations that others will not. My three sisters, my daughter and my son-in-law all have careers in public education. I strongly support public schools. There are more Christian teachers in public schools than there are in Christian schools, just from sheer volume of schools and staff. Many Christian teachers consider their classrooms a mission field in which they can share the love of God through their own caring spirit.

Parent Resources Welcome! East Middle School appreciates the many contributions of our parents. We are fortunate to have so many parents dedicated to making their childrens' education a partnership between school and home. Special Notice to Parents: The CLASS program at East Middle began January 14. Students will receive remediation in either math or communication skills for 90 minutes two days per week. After the remediation, students will have 30 minutes of recreational time. We are very pleased to be offering this opportunity to our students. Before beginning each class session, students will be provided a snack. Bus transportation home will be provided each day as well. This is just the beginning of the program. In the coming weeks, a variety of activities will be offered for adults as the CLASS program reaches its ultimate goal of being a community-based learning center. Classes will be offered in computer technology, arts and crafts, physical fitness, and a variety of other topics. Please contact Mr. Hancock for further information on the adult learning activities. If you are interested in volunteering at East Middle School, please contact Ms. Lampros or Mr. Ritter. Education is a partnership between parents, schools and communities and when we combine our efforts we provide the most positive educational outcomes for our students.

Helping Our Children Grow Strong and Smart
As the father of three children, I remember how exciting their early years were but also how much there was for my children to learn and for me. Every day Faye and I faced a new challenge and a new question. These little individuals come to us with unlimited promise and possibility, and as parents it is our job to make the most of their special gifts. Research has shown that a child's brain grows and develops the most during the first three years of life. That iswhy it is so important to make the most of their early years. Helping our children grow strong will prepare them to be ready to read, ready to learn, ready to achieve and ready to succeed. I am proud to present this website, "Parents as the First Teachers." It is a clearinghouse of links about early childhood development. There are links to websites to learn more about early childhood development and parenting, child care, children's health care and educational activities, as well as organizations working on behalf of children and other collections of links on childhood. Zero to Three : This website is a product of the National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families. The parent's page provides a list of parenting topics from a to z, weekly tips and frequently asked questions.
