HUMAN SERVICES TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM INFORMATION Students are prepared to entry-level positions in institutions and agencies that provide social, community, and educational services. Graduates should qualify for positions in mental health, child care, family services, rehabilitation, correction and educational agencies. The Human Services Technology program consists of a two-year education program. Included in this period of study is the Co-op work experience consisting of 160 hours, 10 hours of clinical practice per week in each of the last two semesters of study. The Substance Abuse track is one of three tracks within the Human Services Technology Program. It is designed to provide students with the educational and co-op experience requirements of the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board (NCSAPCB). The Board requires 270 clock hours of substance abuse and general counseling education of which 180 must be substance abuse specific (SAB prefix courses). The remaining hours are in general skill courses such as crisis intervention, group process and interviewing. The Board also requires 12 clock hours of HIV/AIDS training and 6 clock hours of ethics. The SAB track also provides students the opportunity to do co-op (internship) at an approved substance abuse treatment facility. Many students do their co-op at the Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center (ADTC) at John Umstead Hospital here in Butner, NC. Students are free; however, to do co-ops at other facilities as long as the facility is suitable to the Board.
