LIVESTOCK NEWS
From: Ron Hughes, Associate Ag. Ext. Agent October, 1999 Geese, beavers and sometimes deer can cause major concerns in the production of crops and livestock. Canadian geese have become non-migratory and can overwhelm a farm pond and surrounding fields and pastures. Is there a way to control these pests and still retain the balance of wildlife on and near the pond? Beavers have caused much flooding around what once were quiet streams. They have destroyed large amounts of valuable timber. Can beavers be controlled and used as an asset to the farming operation? Where do deer fit into the overall scheme of a successful farming operation? A educational meeting will be presented at the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, on Devil's Racetrack Road, Four Oaks. NC Cooperative Extension, Johnston Community College and USDA Wildlife Division will be on hand to address how livestock, crop farming and wildlife can co-exist to benefit all. The meeting will take place OCTOBER 26 at 7:00 pm.

APPENDIX FIVE Plant Sample Collection Instructions Once the first detector determines the sample should be submitted to the NCSU Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, care must be taken to avoid contaminating other fields after sampling the suspicious plants. Inadvertent contamination on hands, clothing, vehicles and field equipment could result in unintentional spread of the soybean rust pathogen. Foliar samples of plants suspected of soybean rust should include 5-8 trifoliate leaves. A sample submission form is provided below and can be found at: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/clinic/ If the NCSU lab suspects the sample to be Asian soybean rust, the NCSU lab is responsible for:
  • Submitting the sample to the expert lab in Florida, and USDA-Beltsville lab, and Initiating the communication script (Appendix 4).

PM Iowa State Univ. Science Technol. Ames. coop. ext. Serv. 762, 2. Chapel Hill,NC The University of north carolina Press, 1183.
http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/pocu1.htm
Polygonum cuspidatum
Buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) NATIVE RANGE: Eastern Asia DESCRIPTION: Japanese knotweed is an upright, shrublike, herbaceous perennial that can grow to over 10 feet in height. As with all members of this family, the base of the stem above each joint is surrounded by a membranous sheath. Stems of Japanese knotweed are smooth, stout and swollen at joints where the leaf meets the stem. Although leaf size may vary, they are normally about 6 inches long by 3 to 4 inches wide, broadly oval to somewhat triangular and pointed at the tip. The minute greenish-white flowers occur in attractive, branched sprays in summer and are followed soon after by small winged fruits. Seeds are triangular, shiny, and very small, about 1/10 inch long. Japanese knotweed is designated a noxious weed in the State of Washington. ECOLOGICAL THREAT: Japanese knotweed spreads quickly to form dense thickets that exclude native vegetation and greatly alter natural ecosystems. It poses a significant threat to riparian areas, where it can survive severe floods and is able to rapidly colonize scoured shores and islands. Once established, populations are extremely persistent. DISTRIBUTION IN THE UNITED STATES: Current distribution of Japanese knotweed includes 36 states in the lower 48 from Maine to Wisconsin south to Louisiana, and scattered midwest and western states. It is not currently known to occur in Hawaii.
