Much road construction work is under way around St. Louis this summer, including replacement of bridges and overpasses on I-70. The protesters have demanded that minorities make up 35 percent of workers and 25 percent of contractors in construction projects. "About 350 protesters, led by the Rev. Through the formation of campus and community coalitions and use of a strategic planning process, CAMPUS uses an environmental management approach to prevention. The CAMPUS coalition is a consortium of NC State campus representatives and Raleigh community members. CAMPUS members include student leaders, health educators, and campus safety officials. Community members participating in the coalition include members from Raleigh local businesses, governing boards, and law enforcement agencies. Program Goals
The diverse coalition membership works together toward the following goals: reducing alcohol misuse and abuse; educating students about federal, state and local AOD laws; and establishing a strong working relationship with the Raleigh community to address these important issues that directly affect students.

Overview Cooperation and interaction between governments is a guiding principle for the League. The founders of the League understood that working together, local governments could accomplish a great deal more than could be accomplished separately. Today, as responsibility and authority for various services and regulations are divided among levels of government, intergovernmental cooperation remains essential if citizens are to served effectively and efficiently. Local to Local Town to City to Village: Through the League, cities and towns can exchange information and cooperate on any number of projects. League publications, such as Southern City and survey reports, provide details on how other municipalities are handling particular challenges. Established in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is one of the three original institutions of The University of North Carolina System. It is a public, coeducational, doctoral granting institution composed of approximately 12,500 students, 2,700 of whom are graduate students. While the majority of students are from North Carolina, students also come from forty different states and forty-three foreign countries; minority enrollment is approximately 17 percent. The UNCG faculty is composed of more than 700 members dedicated to excellence in teaching and research; ninety-three percent hold doctoral degrees. The School of Education at UNCG was recently ranked among the top 50 schools of education in the nation by US News and World Report and is one of just two Carnegie-designated, doctoral granting institutions to achieve this ranking. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is an Equal Opportunity educator and employer. The Community
The University is located in a region of north central North Carolina known as the Triad. The region's three principal cities are Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, and together with the surrounding counties, the three cities comprise a metropolitan statistical area of almost 1.2 million people. The area is one of mild climate, natural beauty, and diverse industry. Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city, with a population of approximately 200,000. The city offers a variety of cultural activities including museums, opera, ballet, the symphony, and the University's own Weatherspoon Gallery which boasts an impressive collection of modern art. The Blue Ridge mountains to the west and Atlantic beaches to the east are within a few hours drive. The campus itself is composed of 170 acres and nearly eighty buildings with brick walkways and flowering trees spread throughout.

North Carolina public schools serve every child who comes to their doors, as long as that child is 5 years old on or before October 16. Programs are available statewide for children with special needsincluding academically gifted children. Typically, any child who is 5 years old on or before October 16 will be enrolled in kindergarten. To enroll, a child needs proof of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, mumps, and red and German measles. Certain exemptions are possible for extenuating health or religious reasons. All students need proof of a current physical examination when enrolling in North Carolina schools for the first time. Children are enrolled in the school district in which they live, and school assignments are made by the local school system. Schools provide a wide-range of academic opportunities, as well as support services. School lunch and breakfast are usually offered for a nominal fee. Free school bus transportation, to students who live more than 1.5 miles from school, and free use of textbooks also are provided.

American Indians used the area as a neutral ground for their sick, particularly the area around Hot Springs (30 miles north of Buncombe County). The climate was regarded to be optimalthe components (temperature, barometric pressure, etc.) were actually measured by physicians who wanted to determine the best place for patients to recuperate. A long line of physicians came to Asheville, some to convalesce themselves, and ended up staying, building practices and promoting Asheville as a health retreat. From the late 1880s to the 1930s Asheville rose in prominence as a curative place for tuberculosis. Boarding houses just for this condition, such as the Brexton Boarding House , were abundant. It is notable that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tuberculosis was one of the foremost diseases leading to fatalities. In the 1870s, Asheville was a small town and not very accessible. Dr. H. P. Gatchell, one of the pioneers of treating tuberculosis in Asheville, published a pamphlet promoting the advantages of the Asheville climate for health seekers. It was entitled
