Absolute and Relative Locations
The social studies in many of North Carolina's schools is taught through the five themes of geography: location, place, movement, human-environmental interaction, and region. You are going to complete several tasks and activities that will help you to better understand the definition of location. It includes both relative and absolute locations. "Which is the most used type of location? Why?" These activities should help you to answer these questions and give specific reasons for your response. African American Identity in the Gilded Age, 1877-1715
This project examines the tension experienced by African Americans as they struggled to establish a vibrant and meaningful identity based on the promises of liberty and equality in the midst of a society that was ambivalent towards them and sought to impose an inferior definition upon them. The central question posed by the documents at this site is how African Americans were able to form a meaningful identity for themselves, reject the inferior images fastened upon them, and still maintain the strength to keep "from being torn asunder." Using the documents presented here, look for answers that bring your ideas together in ways that reflect the richness of the African American experience. Ag's Cool - NC Commodities

While NC State has not conducted formal evaluation studies of The Big Event, they have considerable information and feedback on the success of the program. Principal among this information is the enduring popularity of the program, with approximately 2,000 students participating each year. In addition, there is wide-spread recognition and knowledge of the program, which is notable considering that it is a short-lived event in the course of the school year. Also, students participating in other Health Promotion programs reference the positive reputation of The Big Event as a draw to other programs.

Each application for admissions is considered individually with the expectation that students have a satisfactory grade point average and SAT/ACT score. Because of the mandated University of North Carolina System 18% cap on out-of-state freshmen students, academic achievement and SAT/ACT scores must be competitive. The 2000 mean SAT score for in-state students was 896 and 1025 for out-of-state students. The University and the Admissions Office apply the criteria for admissions flexibly to assure that students with unusual qualifications are not rejected in the admissions process. The Office of Admissions should be contacted directly in regard to specific situations.

    Background
    The Battle
IN EARLY 1996, North Carolina's economic development strategy was at a crossroads. At issue was the fundamental question of the state's role in shaping the economy's trajectory. The debate echoed within the Governor's office, in the chambers of the state legislature, the halls of city and county government, in board rooms and courtrooms across the state. Discussion in North Carolina's capital city, Raleigh, focused on whether and how the state should attempt to match or beat bids from other locales hungry for investment capital.
Inter-state bidding wars had become increasingly common in the 1990s.

Does my state have the death penalty?
Yes, North Carolina has executed a total of 31 people since 1976. In 2000, a North Carolina legislative study commission conducted a preliminary examination of the state's death penalty. In their December 2000 report, they recommended that the 2001 legislature enact a statewide moratorium and conduct further study of the system's inequities. The Senate heeded the call in April 2003 and became the first southern legislative chamber to pass a moratorium bill. Though there were enough votes to pass it in the House, the Co-Speaker refused to call a vote and the bill died. Local organizers are now pursuing more city council moratorium resolutions to prepare for a renewed effort in the legislature in 2005. There are currently 2 bills in the House that call for moratoriums and studies and 1 bill for a Study Commission on the death penalty. What is my governor's position on the death penalty?
