ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH
The following is a sampling of more than 300 research projects, education initiatives and outreach programs at NC State University designed to care for North Carolina's environment and promote sustainable development through wiser use of our natural resources. To learn more about these and other research, extension and outreach efforts, contact Dr. Robert I. Bruck, coordinator of University Environmental Programs at (919) 515-2086 or bob_bruck@ncsu.edu., or call News Services at NC State, (919) 515-3470. Closing in on a Fish Killer Since 1991, Pfiesteria piscicida has killed millions of fish and been linked to human illnesses in Mid-Atlantic waters. Efforts to control the organism have been hampered by scientists' inability to identify its toxins. Now, they're closing in. In August 1997, scientists from NC State, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Marines Fisheries Service, successfully isolated several of Pfiesteria's main toxins. Next up: Identifying their chemical structure. "Knowing the structure will let us devise tests to detect the toxin and find treatments for it," says NC State's Dr. JoAnn Burkholder, author of 17 scientific papers on Pfiesteria.

Daughtridge Farm, Edgecombe County THE STATEWIDE ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY For three decades the State Historic Preservation Office in the Office of Archives and History has conducted North Carolina's statewide architectural survey program. The Preservation Office sponsors and co-sponsors, assists and guides dozens of local and regional architectural surveys throughout the stateall part of the statewide program whose mission is to identify, record, and encourage the preservation of North Carolina's rich and varied historic and architectural heritage. See the County Summaries for brief descriptions of survey activities in each county. For each community and county, as for the state and nation as a whole, creating a photographic and written record of historic places is the first, crucial step in recognizing, valuing, and preserving the heritage of the past for the benefit of the present and the future. Each survey project provides a local base of information about community history and architecture. Ideally the surveyor and the survey serve as a prismgathering information from many different residents and many different places, then reflecting that knowledge back to the community in a way that offers residents and others new understanding of the whole and its parts. Benefits of Architectural Surveys : The bedrock of preservation planning and actions, a thorough local survey forms the basis for many preservation decisions. Survey reports, files, and maps are maintained as a permanent record with many longterm benefits: they permit evaluation of properties for nomination to the

This page is written as a finding aid for beginning genealogists interested in families from North Carolina. As such, there are general sources applicable to all beginning genealogists, and some applicable only to North Carolina genealogy. Introduction to the Field
In its broadest sense, genealogy is the study of one's family and how one is related to other family members, be they immediate family members or distant ancestors. In order to find more about a person's ancestors, most genealogists interview relatives, study public records, and read published genealogies (written accounts of people and their descendants or ancestors). While the amount of work involved can seem daunting to the beginning genealogist, it can easily turn into a fascinating adventure in rediscovering lost family connections to the past.
When using an online catalog or a search engine to find resources concerning genealogy in North Carolina, the following subject headings or keywords are very useful for finding what you want. Simply do a subject or keyword search with the appropriate subject heading or keyword. Please remember that your search strategy will vary depending on the online catalog or search engine you use. Be sure to read all the available instructions. You may be able to do more advanced searches by using the Boolean operators "and," "or," and "not."
