Creating innovative products to improve health and quality of life has been a major global economic driver in the past year. Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. economy. Technology has significantly altered the healthcare scene, which has spurred developments in medical devices and created alliances among the many subdivisions within the field. U.S. BIOTECHNOLOGY'S LEADING LOCATIONS DELAWARE OFFERS DIVERSITY IN ALL BIOTECH SECTORS The Battelle industry study (see opposite page) that lists all 50 states' growth, employment, and economic impact from their respected life science industries found that Delaware was the only state in the nation to have a specialization in all four bioscience subsectors, including agriculture feedstock and chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical devices and equipment, and research and testing. "Life sciences and biotechnology is an innovative, diversified, and rapidly expanding field in the state of Delaware," says Judy McKinney-Cherry, Director, Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO). "Results of the Battelle study clearly illustrate that Delaware is the only state in the nation that has specializations in [all] four key bioscience sectors."

My work consists of a range of qualitative methods. I my dissertation I use discourse analysis and participatory action research. I very much enjoy collaboration, particularly interdisciplinary collaboration, and find it to be like teaching: rigorous, stimulating, constantly evolving, and fun. I hope that my research maintains a connection to critically engaged social action and have used qualitative methods to form much more interesting relationships with the people I study than what conventional social scientific research might allow. Publications Other interests Along with spending time with my partner I enjoy reading all sorts of books, especially 20th Century literature from central and eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, playing soccer (apologies for the terminology for those outside the U.S.), hiking, encouraging my cats to wrestle, listening to jazz and the blues, and reluctantly cheering for the Boston Red Sox at the end of each summer. The Rise of the Creative Class
Why cities without gays and rock bands are losing the economic development race. By Richard Florida Purchase Richard Florida's related book As I walked across the campus of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University one delightful spring day, I came upon a table filled with young people chatting and enjoying the spectacular weather. Several had identical blue T-shirts with "Trilogy@CMU" written across them-Trilogy being an Austin, Texas-based software company with a reputation for recruiting our top students. I walked over to the table. "Are you guys here to recruit?" I asked. "No, absolutely not," they replied adamantly. "We're not recruiters. We're just hangin' out, playing a little Frisbee with our friends." How interesting, I thought. They've come to campus on a workday, all the way from Austin, just to hang out with some new friends. I noticed one member of the group sitting slouched over on the grass, dressed in a tank top. This young man had spiked multi-colored hair, full-body tattoos, and multiple piercings in his ears. An obvious slacker, I thought, probably in a band. "So what is your story?" I asked. "Hey man, I just signed on with these guys." In fact, as I would later learn, he was a gifted student who had inked the highest-paying deal of any graduating student in the history of his department, right at that table on the grass, with the recruiters who do not "recruit." What a change from my own college days, just a little more than 20 years ago, when students would put on their dressiest clothes and carefully hide any counterculture tendencies to prove that they could fit in with the company. Today, apparently, it's the company trying to fit in with the students. In fact, Trilogy had wined and dined him over margarita parties in Pittsburgh and flown him to Austin for private parties in hip nightspots and aboard company boats. When I called the people who had recruited him to ask why, they answered, "That's easy. We wanted him because he's a rock star."

It is one of North Carolina's largest cities and foremost industrial centers. Historically a major tobacco manufacturer, Winston-Salem diversifed in the 1990s; its economy now relies heavily on banking, medicine, and higher education. The city also has a brewery, a large bakery, and clothing, textiles, electrical equipment, and appliance factories. The village of Bethabara, the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina, was established nearby in 1753. In 1766 the Moravians built their central town, Salem, a few miles away, and most of the industries and residents of Bethabara moved there. Winston was established in 1849 as the county seat. The two communities were united in 1913.

Research Interests 1. Urban revitalization, community (identity), and space.
I am interested in the ways in which the transformation of urban space entails reconfigurations of economic, political, cultural, and environmental understandings and practices. This work has permitted me to study organizational dynamics between state, market, and society institutions from neighborhood associations to global development agencies. My research focuses on the organization of community that has occurred in cities since the 1800s. In particular, I have examined the discourses and associated material practices that have constituted these efforts, the identity work that is engaged in the name of community, and the effects that these have upon social and spatial relations in cities. Some of my current projects include a study of neighborhood revitalization initiatives in five cities across southeast U.S., and an evaluation project examining the effects of The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD's) Hope VI program in Durham, North Carolina.

    38. Southwest Virginia: "Geography Of Virginia"

    http://www.virginiaplaces.org/regions/15southwest.html

    Where is Southwest Virginia?
Today, the southwestern edge of Virginia is Cumberland Gap. At one time, however, Virginia stretched much further west. After Virginia ceded its western land claims to the new national government in the 1780's, the southwestern edge of the state was on the Mississippi River. Kentucky became an independent state in 1792, so at that point Virginia no longer included the Cumberland River watershed west of the Allegheny Front. The shape of Virginia's western boundaries changed again after West Virginia became an independent state in 1863, leaving only a tiny portion of the Levisa Fork, Big Sandy, and Tug Fork watersheds in what became Southwest Virginia.
Source: National Biological Information Infrastructure Not all of the Virginia mountains are in the southwestern part of the state. However, the mountains are significant barriers to travel there - and the rivers run the wrong way. Well, "wrong" is a relative term, but most of Southwest Virginia is in the Tennessee River watershed. If you consider Pulaski, Giles, and Bland counties to be "Southwest Virginia," thenthe New River watershed still drains away from the Atlantic Ocean. So one way to define the region is by the Eastern Continental Divide, with all the lands west of the divide in Southwest Virginia.
