Friends for Three Hundred Years: It's A Good Life!
An address by Max L. Carter, Guilford College, August 1997 on the occasion of celebrating the 300th anniversary of Quakers in North Carolina Three hundred years! That's longer than Dean Smith has been at UNC! Almost as long as Strom Thurmond has been in the Senate! 300 years ago! Pssst-don't tell anyone, Virginia, but Thomas Jefferson wasn't even alive then! 300 years of North Carolina Yearly Meeting-a common heritage leading to two distinct and vibrant communities of Friends by that name. Quakerism itself has an even longer history in the South. It has been a storied saga, one that will be celebrated in many ways during this climactic week of the five-year Tercentenary observance. Yet many Friends are hesitant to trumpet our own triumphs as a religious society-consistent with the Quaker virtues of meekness, humility, and understatement-if not of honesty and integrity! But this is a week to be proud and tell our story, not only to each other, to the world as well. As the scripture enjoins: time to take the light out from under the bushel. As my mother was wont to say, "She who tooteth not her own horn, the same shall not be tooted!" Think of what the world might be like without Quakers! Without the likes of religious visionaries: Margaret Fell, George Fox, Hannah Whitall Smith, Thomas Kelly, Elton Trueblood; social and political reformers: William Penn, John Woolman, Elizabeth Fry, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony; writers and poets: Jessamyn West, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Michener, Jan de Hartog; musicians and artists: Edward Hicks, Bonnie Raitt, Donald Swann, Fritz Eichenberg, Dave Matthews; business and industry-steel;, railroads, Barclays Bank, Lloyd's of London, Macy's; or beloved products like the Slinky, Monopoly, the Flexible Flyer sled, Cadbury's Chocolates, and Hires Root Beer! What untold human tragedies would there be without the American Friends Service Committee?

FUMA to Sponsor Open House / Reception in the Charlotte Area
For the past several weeks, alumni of Fork Union Military Academy living in the Charlotte, North Carolina area have been clipping out news articles and sending them to the President and admissions staff of that venerable boarding school. Each story tells of rising concerns among parents about local school issues - fears about guns and violence, worries about class size and overcrowded facilities, debates over school boundaries, and concerns about turnovers in administration. Each news item carries the same message: many parents in the Charlotte area are looking for a school like Fork Union Military Academy, a place where their sons can learn and develop in a safe, structured, disciplined environment. Fork Union Military Academy will host an open house/reception at the Hilton Charlotte University Place in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 24, 2005 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Representatives from the school, including admissions staff and faculty, will answer questions about the Academy for families of prospective students. In addition, alumni and former parents in the Charlotte area are invited to attend the reception to reunite with old friends and faculty of the Academy.

Equality is centrally important to Friends, who strive to address "that of God" in each person. Quaker worship and decision-making are both shaped by a common search for the Truth as revealed by the prompting of the Spirit. In practical terms, one result is that Quaker organizations make many of their decisions by a process of gradually discerning, as a community, what is the best decision for the entire group in other words, by building consensus. Another result of the Quaker belief in equality is that many Friends are active in social justice concerns, sharing the conviction that each of us is called to work for peace and understanding, treat all persons with respect regardless of differences, and discern the active presence of the Spirit at work in the world among us. Some Quaker meetings worship in silence, with attenders providing "vocal ministry" as they are led by the Spirit. Others have pastors, and follow a programmed tradition similar to many Protestant Christian denominations. In either case, Friends believe that each person is called to be a minister to others.
