Professors of Historical/Industrial Archaeology Dr. J. Triggs Dr. Triggs has been involved in Historical Archaeology in Ontario and abroad for over twenty years. He has conducted field school excavations each summer at the Historical Naval and Military Establishments at Penetanguishene as well as the late 18th/early 19th century Beasley Site in Hamilton since 1991. As a professional heritage consultant, he has directed research projects at several museums and historic sites in Ontario including Dundurn Castle, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Battlefield House, and Chiefswood Museum. Most recently his work has taken him to the Royal Navy Dockyard, Bermuda, where a study of the standing structures and documentary records continues a program of research begun in 1998 in association with the Bermuda Maritime Museum. Education: PhD, University of Toronto Research Interests: I am interested in the archaeology of the Historic Period in North America, particularly on military and domestic sites. My current research at the Royal Navy base in Penetanguishene examines the adaptations of the British military to remote frontier conditions. Concepts such as environmental change, social geography, and technological innovation and modification have guided my research at this site for over a decade. Beginning in 2002, it is my intention to apply the results of this research to the British siege camps at the mid-eighteenth century site of Louisbourg, Cape Breton.

Changes within the practice of archaeology in north america will be discussed, and these will be placed in the context of anthropology more generally.

North American Archaeology (Anthropology 332) Spring 2003, Mon. and Wed., 6:10-7:30 pm , BIO 205 Prof. John H. Walker Office hours: Mon. and Wed. 3:00-4:30 pm People were living in what is now the United States, shaping the landscape many thousands of years, and hundreds of generations before the present day. This course will survey and interpret the evidence of the indigenous peoples of North America, beginning with the earliest inhabitants of the continent up to and including societies that made contact with the Europeans. Changes within the practice of archaeology in North America will be discussed, and these will be placed in the context of anthropology more generally. Current debates will be highlighted, and new interpretations of archaeological sites will be presented. The relationships between archaeology and contemporary Indian peoples will be an important part of the course. Prerequisites             This course is intended as a basic introduction to the topic for undergraduate students. There are no formal prerequisites, but previous experience with anthropological and archaeological ideas will be helpful. Anthropology 101 or 105 would be especially good introductions. Evaluation             Grades are based on a combination of student participation in the class, two writing assignments, a midterm and a final examination. Writing is not the purpose of the course, but it is an important part of the course. There will be two writing assignments, both of which will require you to construct an argument and support that argument with evidence. The second writing assignment will require a modest amount of research. The relative weight of the requirements are as follows:

    66. On The Ethnology And Archaeology Of North America (1868)

The Journal of the Ethnological Society of London,
new series, vol. i., 1869, pp.218-22I. Scientific Memoirs III (Address of the President, delivered April 13th, 1869.) [432] T HE broad physical features of the American continent may be described in a few words. Near its western coast a range of mountains runs nearly north and south from the Arctic Ocean to Cape Horn, interrupted only by the low ground of the Isthmus of Panama; while, in the Andes, its peaks reach heights surpassed only by the greatest elevations of the Himalayan range. Westward of this range, the general slope of the continent is steep and rapid to the Pacific eastward, it is slow and gradual, giving rise to vast and, usually, fertile plains, bounded by the North and South Atlantic Oceans. But, in both North and South America, each plain is interrupted towards the east by mountain-ranges of a secondary importance, the Apalachians in the north, and the Brazilian mountains in the south. Thus, supposing the American continent to have been peopled at a period subsequent to that at which it had attained its present form and relations to the Old World, it is vastly more probable that it was stocked with men from Northern Asia than from any other region. But it is quite as reasonable to adopt a different supposition. From the Mexican frontier to the Arctic Ocean the fauna of North America abounds in species representing, if not identical with, those of Europe and Asia; while, at the same time, it presents an admixture of forms of a totally different and especially American character. South of the Mexican frontier the purely American groups increase in, number and variety as the Old-World forms disappear; and the fauna of the vast region which stretches from Mexico to Cape Horn is as peculiar as that of Australia.

    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Oracle/2596/historyofarchaeology.html
The History of North American Archaeology
Introduction : Important elements in the pattern of development of archaeology on this continent included: (1) the location of the founding European settlements in the east; (2) regional environmental characteristics; (3) the visibility, "allure," and accessibility of the archaeological record in each culture area; (4) the quicker pace of development toward the east until the 20th century. There were four main periods in the history of North American archaeology: Period I: Incidental Discovery and Speculation:
    A. These are the earliest but incidental reports of the most conspicuous archaeological features by explorers, fur traders, travelers, etc.; there were distortions but they were important because many are now destroyed.
    B. The speculation was based on European myths: Atlantis, Mu, Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, Tartars, Scythians, Welsh.
    C. The Mound Builders were postulated and the search for treasure in the mounds began.
    D. Jose de Acosta (1589) suggested that Indians were from Asia but he was only one hypothesis among many others.

A Chronology of North American Archaeology
From the moment of the discovery of the New World questions of Native American origins and the nature of the cultures discovered there were to captivate the minds of the discoverers, the colonists and the members of European society. North American archaeology is the story of the development of a systematic means to try to answer these questions. The beginning of that story is one in which discovery was accidental and answers to questions were almost always purely speculative. This remained the case until the mid nineteenth century when some systematic means were developed to collect data and interpret it in a meaningful way. The time-line that follows is a brief summary of some of the highlights of the story of North American archaeology. Click on the dates for a pop-up window that contains a more complete description of each event, or, click here for a complete timeline without pop-up windows.
    The Speculative Period (1492-1840)
    - Jose de Acosta published Historia Natural y Moral de las Indias. In this book, he discusses, among other things, the origins of the Native Americans.

THE FINAL EXAM Just like the beginning statement in the syllabus, don't let the length of this list intimidate you. There really is a lot of redundancy built into this. Think of short definitions and creative ways you would cluster some of these. Some terms and concepts "comfortably" fit together, while others don't. Use the following as a review sheet to test yourself. If you can provide a definition and example of each of the following terms and concepts, you are in good shape. Use this to try to test yourself (before I test you!). As you go down the list, check off those you feel you already have a good grasp of, or, if you like, maybe check off those that may be most problematic(?). You make the choice! During review we will definitely disqualify some of these (i.e. they won't be on your test.). I encourage you to work with one another on these terms and the "class telephone book" should help
