Overview
Course Requirements and Policies
Course Grading, Exams and Papers
Your course grade will be determined from the grades you receive on two mid-term exams (each counting for 25% of your course grade), a final paper (40%), and a presentation on the topic of your final paper (10%). A brief abstract and outline of your final paper topic is due in class on Nov. 17. Your presentations on the topic of your final paper will be scheduled for the last week of class (Dec. 6-10), and will address the scope of your subject and your plan of analysis, so you can receive feedback and comments from your classmates. The mid-term exams will be in a format of take-home essay exams, for which your completed essays should be 8-10 pages in length (due on Oct. 4 and Nov. 8). Your final papers should be 15-20 pages in length and are due in the Anthropology Department, 109 Davenport Hall, by 12pm on Friday, Dec. 17. All exam essays and final papers should be double spaced, with 10-12 point font and one inch margins. Attendance and Participation
Your regular attendance and active participation are of central importance for this course to provide you with both a fun and satisfying educational experience. I reserve the right to lower the course grade (by one letter grade) of any student who fails to regularly attend class during the semester.

These will be available by 11 PM on the evening before the lecture by clicking on the LECTURE TOPIC for the day. I will not give out my lecture notes nor will the film be available on another day. If you miss a film, class lecture or discussion, you must obt ain the notes from another student. Material not on the outline but presented in class may appear on the exam and you will be responsible for it. You also should take notes during class discussions and on the posted question sheet for films. All material from lectures, discussions, films, and readings is potential material to be included on the exam. In addition, proper classroom etiquette requires that you abstain from talking, reading, or leaving the class early (without first notifying me before class). It is very distracting to other students and to the professor.

Faulkner, Alaric and Gretchen Faulkner, The French at Pentagoet 1635-1674: An Archaeological Portrait of the Acadian Frontier Optional Selected essays from the Colonial Williamsburg Journal, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia 1996. Course Description Although touching on other areas and periods, the case studies used in this course have a distinctly northeastern focus. In particular, here in Maine we have the advantage of having a fairly large number of French and English colonial sites dating from the 1600s which have survived in spite of the urban sprawl characteristic of much of the northeast. One site you will read about in detail is Fort Pentagoet, a seventeenth-century Acadian site in Castine, Maine. This case study concentrates on the early European colonization of this part of the northeast and its effects on the indigenous population. Other sites we will study this semester are the Colonial/Early American seaport at Newburyport, Massachusetts, the Shaker settlement at Poland Hill, Maine, the Canada Road, Jamestown Virginia, and the 1607 Popham Colony in Phippsburg, Maine.

Course Description
This course will introduce students to the amazing variability and diversity of North American prehistoric cultures. We will begin by examining the theories and debates over the arrival of humans in the New World. We will then proceed chronologically, examining the developments of each region of North America during four major cultural periods, including the Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian. The last part of the semester will be spent more critically investigating cultures of the northeastern United States. Particularly, subjects like the origins of the Iroquois, northeastern pottery styles, and the effects of European contact on the aboriginal inhabitants of the region will be discussed in greater depth. You will also be able to pursue a topic in North American prehistory in greater depth through a group presentation, given at the end of the semester. Grading Your grade for the semester will be based on two exams (one midterm and one final), your performance in the group presentation, and class participation. The midterm exam will be given on the date in the course outline and the final will be on the scheduled final exam date. Both exams will be non-cumulative, multiple choice and essay. The group presentation will take place at the end of the semester. Finally, your class participation grade will be based on your attendance and engagement in class discussions.

The eastern portion of North America amplifies the problem, because European settlers were debating various aspects of Indian origins the moment they stepped off their boats. Consequently, there is a lot of literature on the subject and numerous avenues in which we could explore the area. For this semester I have decided to focus on a series of edited volumes that contain articles written by some of the principal archaeologists currently working in Eastern North America. The contributions in these books were meant to be read in their entirety and, often, in the sequence in which they are arranged. Consequently, instead of dividing up the various articles and assigning different ones to individual students, I want you to read the books according to the editors' intent, from cover to cover.

    Introduction
America is named after the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512 AD). The German geographer Martin Waldseemüller in his popular account of his travels first used the name in 1507. It originally referred only South America and the West Indies America United States of America USA Americas South America are considered separate continents. In addition, North American archaeologists customarily divide lands of the western hemisphere into three broad regions: North America , Central or Mesoamerica , and South America North and South America North America is the third largest continent with 24 235 280 square kilometers (km ).
